Really this. If you leave your starter city before level 20, you will have to go back to complete your storyline quest anyway. Doing some leves and building your funds is an advisable goal atm.

Thirdly, do you only get crafting recipes through levequests?

    Thanks!
Hmm, some unclear answers up in here...

1a) You can pick up guildleves in all three cities. You pick them up in the adventurer's guild. The adventurer's guild is labeled on the map. You pick up leves from the NPCs behind the counter (the counter that has glowing blue panels).

1b) The lancer's guild is located in Gridania, but you don't need to go there except to do class quests. There are three class quests currently; one at level 20, 30, and 36.

    2) This one was covered, but you can buy additional weapons/armor in the market wards. You can either use the item search and buy directly from players, or you can go the respective wards and purchase from NPCs that stand in the center. Battlecraft Ward has an NPC that will sell you low-level weapons, Lower Tailor's Ward has an NPC that will sell you low-level gear.

    3) Crafting leves (also called 'local levequests') will tell you how to make a recipe when you complete them, but you don't need to 'learn' recipes. Assuming you (as a person, not a character) know the ingredients to make something, you can make whatever you want, provided you are high enough level. mooglebox.com is a good source for crafting recipes.

I'd also like to mention that getting to learn the search option for the market wards will help you. NPC prices for gear are usually higher than player's retainers prices. Make yourself aware of what gear is optimal level for you as well. If you just search battlecraft > gladiator arm's > you'll see swords, for example. And you can see all the optimal levels for those weapons as you go down the list. You can do this with all the items/categories and I recommend looking through these before buying from an npc. However, look at things logically. Sometimes players can also try to overcharge for an item. Particularly for crafting ingredients that can be purchased from an npc. (Players will sometimes sell these items for just a little higher than the NPCs price, purposely, to try to trick people into buying from them.)

I hope I didn't overload you with this info, but I thought if I was still a bit new, this is info I'd like to know. =)

You are correct. I'd never tried to use an airship before having a highest level or 27 or so and wasn't aware of this at all (just as I'm sure many who quote 5k as the price never tried before they had a level 50), thank you for pointing out my error. I hate misinformation provided by myself as much as by any other. Still, 2500 gil is significantly cheaper than 5k when you're starting out, so I imagine this is useful info for newbies.

Airships do cost 100 * your highest level (unless your highest level is below 25, in which case you have to pay exactly 2500 gil to ride). Much better ^_^

Generally, your first weapons will be "Weathered", weak and untradable but cheap. Other players can't sell you these items, but they're common pieces of level 1 gear that are easily obtainable from either NPC shop owners or leves. Keep in mind that basic works. You came into the world with some gear, let it carry you through your first few levels and don't get rid of it too soon as you probably will need it again for levelling other jobs.

When it is time to get gear, do some research on external sites. Find out what you can use at your level (you must be at least the required level for some things and should be within a couple of levels of optimal levels in other things) and find out where you can get it for free or how it is made. Shposhae for example has a lot of low level (about level 15-25) gear. It might be hard to solo at those levels, especially with lower level gear, but see if you can make friends who feel like doing a dungeon run there as a break from leves and grinding and boss battles. People will, by and large, overcharge in the markets so it's much better if you can get your own gear.

Also, levelling gathering and crafting skills at the same time will save you a lot of money. You're a DoW? Mine for ores, turn them into usable metal bars, make yourself a nice sword or spear or helm. All that that will really cost you is a little time and effort, and in the end you'll likely want to have those jobs levelled up anyhow. If you can't make something yourself, try getting the materials together and asking a friend.

Essentially, the game is soloable, but you'll get everywhere much faster with some good friends or in a linkshell. Just be courteous and open to suggestions from others and they'll be happy to play with you again ^_^

Edit: Just fixed a little mistake.
