Carbuncle was simply the first egi glamour using that developed system. I'd hardly call that something promised or hinted at, when it's already there.

3.5 added Carbuncles and the Egi Glamour System. 4.0 added a demi-egi. While 4.1 hasn't added a new egi glamour, they didn't say that every future patch would contain a new egi glamour, just that new egi glamours would be added in future patches.
It's too soon to call it a dead system, so let's hold off on that until we know what'll be in 4.2.
