So I haven't found a quest regarding this yet, but curiosity on XIV's Flans.

What are their origins for this game? I know in Final Fantasy XI they were basically failed Blue Mage experiments, but in this game they're just kinda there for the sake that Flans were in almost every FF game.

Was there any information on these mob types yet?

(and yes it is important but I like knowing lore of the MMO I play >.>)

I think most of the mobs don't have a back-story, they just are, but for the sake of the argument, lets say they are punished Lalafell children that didn't go to bed in time, you think it doesn't make sense? ask yourself this, have you ever seen a Lalafell child?

they said somewhere on a post that they were working on the lore of eorzea more and things will start to trickle out. So perhaps we will get this at some point

Taking a stab here based on what we already know - but this is all purely speculation.

Many of the strange phenomena in Eorzea connect back to its abundance of crystals and the comparatively high levels of aether flowing through the land.

I have only ever seen flans and their relatives in underground areas, including Toto-Rak and the Copperbell Mines, suggesting that their existence is tied to these places where aether flow is particularly strong. My suspicion is that they are either classified as "voidsent", meaning they are considered to be "sent from the void", or alternatively soulkin. Ferne discusses the classifications here:

Next to voidkin, soulkin probably rates as one of the most difficult taxonomical terms to decipher. For the most part, the regnum (kingdom) and class names used in Eorzea are fairly straightforward:

    Bloodborn
    Seedkin: cactuars, funguars, roselings, etc.
    Vilekin: chigoes, midges, yarzons, etc.
    Wavekin: megalocrabs, orobons, slugs, etc.
    Cloudkin: dodos, chocobos, vultures, etc.
    Beastkin: Wolves, moles, rats, etc.
    Scalekin: basilisks, raptors, drakes, etc.
Spoken: Ixal, kobolds, sylphs, the 5 races of Eorzea, etc.

    Bloodless
    Ashkin: skeletons, wights, ghosts, etc.
    Soulkin: spriggans, coblyns, doblyns
    Forgekin: juggernauts, mammets

    Transcendents
    Voidsent: ahriman, ogres, imps, etc.

Soulkin are called such by Eorzean scholars because it is believed that while these creatures once had a will of their own, they now find their souls bound to another object or being, and are essentially being controlled by the invasive secondary force.

Sorry about the brevity, but I hope that clears things up a bit!

Now, back to work I go!
So if the flan is void-sent, then it is appearing where the natural order of things has been disrupted and is part of the manifestation of that disruption, much like Ahirmans, Ogres and Imps are not meant to be in this world.

If the flan is soulkin, it is most likely the soul of some creature caught up in a strong flow of aether and bound to a mass of jelly of sorts.

I suspect the latter soulkin explanation is more likely.

It was mentioned a tad in one of the localization responses. It was something like "The citizens of Eorzea believe all the of the monsters classified as 'Voidsent' to be from one of the Seven Hells. Whether or not this is true, however, is another matter entirely."

I might find the source of that later.

Edit: Dang, beaten to the punch.

There, there. Don't feel bad about it. I just happen to be a loc-forum junkie.

One of the reasons I'd love to see a bestiary make it into 2.0, lore junkies unite!

Definitely, one of my favorite pastimes in just about any single-player FF was using Scan on everything and anything, I remember first time i played VIII and found Bahamut, I was underleveled and that sucker hit like a semi, didn't get a chance to use scan because battle was too tight, ended up giving up the victory and loading a previous point so I could scan again.

Albeit there was no bestiary.... but still, in XII I spent more time reading bestiary than I did playing the game itself.

Yeah I'm big on lore too and hope they do what they did with FFXI -- Release lore books or at least a lore PDF on some stuff lol. This is what I loved about XI the most, even monsters had detailed lore about them (not generic enemies like lesser lizzards though) -- Soulflayers for example are the common form of a Blue Mage who goes through a physical transformation:

I really hope SE comes through in this regard.

Wait, this is a flan, meaning the failed experiments of Blue Mages?
I'd not call it a fail!
Anyway, I guess you mean the Puddings, rite? If so, I don't know that much, but I think that not only they need a lore in the world. That's something that could suggest our minds with a Bestiary.

To add our enemies on it we could either Fight them or "Scan" them. Or even unlock something that lets us get pieces of bestiary from NPCs. The concept is to store Lore and Characteristics about said monsters/enemies that you either have fought or met. Let's say... You can discover the Lore of a monster/enemy by "Scanning" it, but to really know his characteristics you have to fight it and therefore know it better, so to get prepared for future fights.
