    Curious...............

Was wondering if there are any players who joined a Grand Company different than the city state in which you originated.
Also concerning the Red Mage job, I know it says lev 50 war or magic, so you do NOT take a job at lev 30 right ? Say I was a lev 30 lancer I just keep leveling up to lev 50 in lancer then go pick up the Red Mage job ?

You could do that with the lancer, but you would be missing out on the vast majority of your tool kit. Dragoon has many useful, and much more powerful, skills than what you get access to as Lancer(unless they changed it since I got everything to 60).

As for the Grand Company, I know you can change them later on(and bounce back and forth every 30-days I think it is), but not sure if the initial joining of a GC can be done in a different city state than where you started.

My alt ended up in Gridania like my main character so I chose Maelstrom as her Grand Company. I recently moved her to Immortal Flames to get some portraits.

If your heart is set on being a red mage then you can skip the dragoon job questline. Nothing you lose will hurt your ability to reach level 50.

Lots of players join a different GC than the one for the origin city state.

You do not HAVE to pick up any other job prior to picking up RDM, but there is really no good reason not to.
If you are a lancer you can technically go on being a lancer until you pick up Red Mage at level 50, but it is really a better idea to pick up Dragoon at level 30 and then play as DRG until you pick up RDM. You loose nothing by taking a job at level 30, but can gain quite a bit.

A job is just an item you equip to a class. You don't lose your 30 levels of lancer by equipping it with a dragoon job stone.
No reason not to get your job!

Yeah, if you want you can unlock and level up every job. A lot of people have. And what the others said was right, choosing a grand company is completely independent from your starting city. In fact you could start in one city, join the GC of a second city when the quest tells you to choose, then buy a house in the 3rd city later on(provided any are for sale).

My char was from Gridania, but he's on Flames (Ul'dah). That's because Flames HQ is on a convenient place for me and I liked their glam best.

No. You must level any class/job to 50 AND buy Stormblood. But that's valid only for Red Mage and Samurai. With a lvl 30 Lancer, you can become a Dragoon. Just do all the quests on the Lancer Guild.

I started as a Pugilist in Gridania before they made class selection the determining factor of which city you would start in. I enlisted with the Twin Adders when I went through the introduction quests to the three companies because I enjoyed how they were presented in the story more than the other two. Nowadays if you start as a Pugilist, the game will force you to start in Ul'dah, which is my least favorite of the three starting nations. If that was the case for me, I would have definitely chosen a different Grand Company rather than go with the Flames.
