Considering jobs will prohibit the use of skills from another class.. Materia

How would you guys feel about materia granting us skills like it used to do in FF7?

I have the feeling that as a monk having materia that gives Protect or StoneSkin would be perfect.

jobs are for party play so why would you need a materia that gives something the mages are supposed to do anyway.
