    Taxes

i have a feeling that the taxes by selling items don't work as they should be.

when i put an item on the market, then it tells me how much taxes i have to pay and shows me how much money i will get when the item is sold, with taxes taken into consideration - but the problem is: this number is not correct.

also the number on the market board is shown without taxes, means the price on the board is also not correct.

example... when i put an item let's say on the market in limsa and a person buys the item from the market board in limsa, then neither i or the person who bought the item are paying taxes.

when a person buys the same item from the market in ul'dah, then I and the person who bought the item will pay taxes.

this means basically that the person who buys my item decides how much money i will get at the end. and in one case none taxes are payed at all and in the other case the taxes are payed twice.

i don't think this is fair.

i think only the seller should have to pay taxes, and he should have to pay them all the time (regardless of where the buyer buys the item), and the buyer don't have to pay taxes (just like in real world). then the seller knows exactly how much money he will get from selling, thanks to the preview with taxes calculated in, and the buyer will also exactly know how much he has to pay (without clicking through all the items to see the taxes).

    i live in germany ^^

yes, sale taxes exist. but when i buy something i don't pay the taxes (directly). the seller pays the taxes. and i pay the seller, who has accordingly to the taxes increased the price.

i guess this is common praxis around the world? :O

I thought this to be interesting too.

    Sellers will always get taxed.

But a buyer can avoid paying tax if they travel to the region where the item is located.

I looked at it much like buying and selling items in real life through services such as eBay - where it's 'free' for buyers to browse the service and only pays the seller the price for the item charged by the them, but to actually list those items there a seller is charged a fee by the organization/company running the service as a way of paying for the service's 'upkeep'.

From a technical standpoint, this is a legacy of FFXI's Auction House (AH) system where taxes were charged on both the seller and the bidder in order to try and combat RMT using the AH to move their ill-gotten gil (and a way of trying to stabilize the resultant hyperinflation caused by RMT to remove gil from the economy).

Naturally though this didn't work as well as it should as players (especially RMT) just then bypassed the AH and used personal bazaars instead in outside zones like the infamous 'Rolanberry market' just outside the zone line to Lower Jeuno (this is coincidentally why an actual AH was never implemented in FFXIV and player bazaars were rolled into retainers and the Market Board, it was to try and prevent a repeat of that nonsense.).

Either way, it's another means of SE trying to control the influence of outside factors in the economy (i.e: RMT) by taking gil out of it even if they're rather small amounts.

    This is incorrect.

The amount of money you get is fixed. Taxes based on the purchaser's market only affect the buyer. Seller's taxes are always paid, and have no relation to the location of the transaction.

but sometimes i don't pay taxes at all. and the only explaination i have is that it depends on from where the buyer is buying my items.

for example i list a couple of items for 250 gil and i sometimes get 250 and sometimes only 243 for an item - all within the same day. sometimes i pay taxes and sometimes not :O

I am on a low pop server. I put my retainers in Ishguard for one reason. Very few people park their retainers there so I never get taxed for items I sell. It depends (I assume) on how many items are being sold through retainers at that city. Every now and then I will get taxed but this is usually around the release of new content when more people come back.

So, taxes for the seller is based on which city you park your retainers at.
