This first happened this morning. I was running Direct x9.c, I think DirectX11 wasn't available because I was getting the DirectX issue which was discovered after I hit the play button.

I believe it was a graphic's card issue since that was what came in the update for my machine on 12/7.

I will have to figure out how to restore or use a previous version software for my video card.

I believe I have had GeoForce Experience loaded since I got the computer so I will have to also figure out how to unistall or disable that.

The system restore did work, however, when my computer gets its next update I am sure I am going to run into the issue again. Additionally, after the restore I was able to select DirectX11 (tried it out but seemed a bit laggy to me although some of it moved faster so I went back to DirectX9.c).

    Thank you for the reply.

It's good to hear that you got it to work, even if it seems like just a temporary resolution.

If you are having trouble uninstalling the Geforce Experience (or any other program for that matter) simply go to the control panel and select 'uninstall a program.' You can also check the Task Manager and check under the 'Startup' tab. This will show which programs will start automatically when your computer starts up. If you find any programs that aren't necessary, try disabling them, then restart the computer.

To install a different driver version for your graphics card, download them from Nvidia's website and install them. Simply find an older version of your card's drivers and install them. The driver website can be found here: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx

I hope one of these will help you find a more permanent solution.

    DX11 Crashes

Ever since the new update I have been getting DX11 crashes --with the newest drivers for my amd R9 card they were happeneing so often that I could not even attempt to do anything so I rolled back my driver. I am currently at driver 16.12 .1 and am still getting crashes but not as often. I am using the windows 10--64 drivers for your information. please find out the problems and repair them as soon as possible.

Hello Aedria, Thank you for playing Final Fantasy XIV!

We apologize for any inconvenience you may be experiencing. The crashing of Direct X may be caused by a variety of issue. We would suggest lowering the graphic settings in game, as the intense graphics in dungeons can cause the crashing. We also suggest that the graphics card are using the latest drivers for the card. Should you be using Direct X 11 and experiencing the issue, we would suggest reverting back to Direct X 9 to see if the issue still persists. Also make sure your Graphics card drivers are updated to the latest version (alternatively, if you feel the graphics driver update caused the issue, you can try to install an older, more stable version). Also make sure that any program that provides and overlay is also disabled. As this may interfere with the game, we suggest leaving this disabled or uninstalled. Also, try disabling or closing all background applications/programs.

Please let us know if you resolve your issue and what resolved it so, that we can further assist other players.
    Thank you again.

    still crashes

I have tried all that you have suggested and am currently using a card driver from January of last year and it still crashes. I cannot even log into a character using DX9 it crashes during the login screen. Currently this is the only game that is doing this that I have on my system. (I have 9 others)

also I don't know if this has anything to do with my DX11 problem but Rowena is not in Mordhona so I can complete the quest 'A Self-improving Man'

    Hello Aedria,

I am very sorry you are still experiencing this issue. Have you tried running the launcher in Administrator mode or Compatibility mode? You also can try reverting back to an older graphics card driver, not just reinstalling them.

I hope this can help! Thank you for playing Final Fantasy XIV!

I had similar problem and fixed it reinstalling the game and setting compatibility mode with windows 8 in the game .exe (not in the launcher), its a file called ffxiv_dx11.exe located in game subfolder.

    Hope this helps..

I have already reinstalled the game but it didn't work, I tried setting compatibility mode to ffxiv_dx11.exe to both W7 and then W8, still doesn't work... looks like I'm doomed to play with DX9 forever...

    Having the same issue now.
i have the latest Windows 10 64bit official copy etc etc, fully updated.

I have researched through the net and tried numerous suggestions. Updated drivers, reinstalled etc etc.

Result - exactly the same as before: Fatal Error when trying to start the game in dx11, but runs ok with dx9.

Is there an official solution to this from SE anywhere?

Hello! Thank you for playing Final Fantasy XIV!

The issue you are describing is most associated with interference with the game data. Most of the time, it results from certain security/privacy changes on Internet Explorer. Other times it occurs when an application that is running in the background is causing interference, such as Anti-virus software, firewalls, media players, web browsers, etc.

Please make sure all background applications (including anti-virus programs such as Norton, Kaspersky, Windows Defender, etc.) have been disabled and/or closed to minimize game interference.

Ensure that the latest version of Internet Explorer is installed on your PC (even if you don't use Internet Explorer), please do not use Edge as that is a different internet platform. Once Internet Explorer is up-to-date, please open the IE browser, open the "Tools", go to "Internet Options" and adjust the following settings:
Under the "General" tab, please delete ALL browser history.
Under the "Security" tab, please move the slider to the lowest possible settings or no higher than "Medium"
Under the "Privacy" tab, please move the slider to the lowest possible settings or to "Allow All Cookies"
Under the "Advanced" tab, please make sure that "Allow software to run or install even if signature is invalid" is CHECKED.
Make sure that all SSL and TLS (EXCEPT SSL 3.0) are CHECKED.
    [SSL 3.0 should be UNCHECKED]
Hit "Apply" to save the settings, and then "OK, to close the Internet Options menu.
Right-Click on the FFXIV launcher icon and select "Properties"
Go to the "Compatibility" tab, and change the compatibility mode to "Windows 7"
Hit "Apply", then "OK" to save the changes.
    Please RESTART your PC now.
Once your PC has been restarted, Right-Click the FFXIV launcher icon once more and select "Run as Administrator"

If the suggestions provided above do not resolve the issue, then there is a communication error.
Check the following Port Ranges on your router/modem to ensure that the following Port Ranges have been opened/forwarded/triggered:
    ▼TCP
    54992 through 54994,
    55006 through 55007,
    55021 through 55040

*You may learn how to do this by visiting http://www.portforward.com/
Find your specific router's brand and model number from the 'List of Routers' and you will be provided a step-by-step guide on how to access these port settings.
Otherwise, your ISP may forward these ports for you.*

If you have properly configured your router, and you are still experiencing these issues, our next suggestion is to bypass the router, and connect your computer directly to your modem. Please ensure that you power down both the modem and the computer for at least five minutes before attempting to connect to FINAL FANTASY XIV.

If you continue to receive these same errors when you are connected directly to the modem, then the problem lies with your ISP. We would recommend contacting them and advising them that one or more of the ports previously provided to you are being blocked or filtered, and that you do need access on these ports.

Thank you for posting in the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.
Please let us know if your issue gets resolved and what resolved it, So we can further assist other players.
