Of. The. Lock. As heartless as it sounds SE has to maintain their servers and actually make it so people can play on them, as for the whole "Oh large populations don't affect server stability and have absolutely no downsides. That's fake news fed to us by the corporate overlords." This realm of thinking is illogical, irrational, and completely self-centered on the needs of one group of players rather then all of them.
