Just like they do with parsers. Except they and everyone else knows that they don't have the sheer manpower to police such a thing, so the policy is just there in case they need to act on it.
I suck at it. Like I do with real instruments.
I have tested the instruments. Notes would be easier to read if they had the letters on them.
Colorblindness makes it harder for my partner.
Square, can we have an OCE fanfest now?
I think it was a missed opportunity to do this exclusively with the Bard Job and not also with house instruments.
I was honestly pumped but with how they chose to set it up, I'm left quite disappointed. It seems ridiculous that macros can't be used for this and we have to rely on setting up our hotbars for it, which means each time you want to play a new song you have to ditch the old song you worked hard to set up and set up another one.
Couldn't we choose to go into perform mode and this would allow us to save hotbars for different songs or have a different UI if they won't allow us to use macros? Or allow us to write out a song, play it and save it to a scroll of some sort? Then by using the scroll it would play back the song as we recorded it? I don't know. This seems quite tedious as it is....

「Life is such a fragile thing…」
I honestly like the idea behind it but I am not a fan of the implementation.
Tried it yesterday and seeing all those buttons and no way to macro it kinda killed it for me. Maybe I will randomly hit some notes when I have time but even just trying to play the notes from others was too much for me. I do play an instrument in real life and I am not tone-deaf or anything but all those buttons are too much. I would have to lay them down the exact way the music is played, to even stand a chance to do it, since I am bad at remembering such stuff. This means that I would have to rearrange the hot bars every single time that I want to play a new song. Thats too much a hassle for me.
A new UI when you click on perform and the possibility to create macros..if those were in it, I would have absolutely loved it.
Still like how some are already playing quite the songs with that but sadly for me this will be quite unused.
Letter from the Producer LIVE Part IX Q&A Summary (10/30/2013)
Q: Will there be any maintenance fees or other costs for housing, besides the cost of the land and house?
A: In older MMOs, such as Ultima Online, there was a house maintenance fee you had to pay weekly, but in FFXIV: ARR we decided against this system. Similarly, these older MMOs also had a system where your house would break down if you didn’t log in after a while in order to have you continue your subscription, but this is a thing of the past and we won't have any system like that.
With the poor implementation of input lag, macros, lack of action bars and keybindings etc it's pretty much useless.
I have however figured out how to make a macro with autohotkey that sends 1 action per keypress in a sequence using the pause and send functions..
For example: each time you hit the "X" key it sends out a the next note key "1,2,1,4,2,5" etc, so not full automation and you still have to time the clicks correctly (despite the input lag)...
Would this be allowed in FF14? It would be allowed in WoW at least...
Arrange the bars like a piano. Then you don't need letters.
Real instruments don't have these things either.
See above and play in real time.
I agree that they should provide it's own interface, because using existing hotbars to manually plant in 37 actions is a little ... eeh.
Thanks for the heads up, I actually haven't though about this, shame it mutes the other things too but oh well.
Btw, a bit offtopic but is there also a way to hide the macro sounds some people love to spam?
Yesterday I had this DPS dude and he had a macro for every single buff or debuff, was literally bleeding my ears.
If you mean the sound effects such as <se.1>, they fall under system sounds. Disabling that setting mutes all macro sounds including your own, countdown sounds, menu clicking sounds, Duty popup sounds and other similar things. Thanks for the heads up, I actually haven't though about this, shame it mutes the other things too but oh well.
