Some Advice For Anyone Who's Going To Try Rival Wings Tomorrow

Hey there, I wanted to put a few things out there for anyone who's excited to try Rival Wings tomorrow, or even just a little bit curious about it:

    1. We're All Going To Be New To It - This will be both exciting and probably frustrating at some points because while we have a basic idea of what to do, that's all we know so far. However, there are PvPers out there who have a general sense of team play and will likely step up to lead. Assuming they aren't just giving bad directions or advice, it's worth it to lend them your support and work as a team. It's more fun that way anyways.

    2. Information is REALLY Scarce - Piggybacking off #1, part of the reason we know so little is because SE has told us so little. And while I'm sure the patch notes will give a little more, there have always been interesting possibilities not explained in the patch notes or any official information given by SE. That said, if you figure something out, share it with your team! Share it with the community! Build it up and keep it competitive, but more than that, help everyone to learn and enjoy it more.

    3. Please Participate - I feel bad saying this, but because of the rampant botting and afking for XP back at the start of Stomblood, it soured many toward PvP who may have been trying it for the first time. If you plan to queue for it, please be active and participate. Yes, defense seems like it's going to be an important part of RW gameplay, and someone's got to man those cannons. But if the area is clear and your team needs help, please be willing to help. Don't just sit in a cannon or circle the key points all match, and definitely don't be the guy that spoils the fun for your team.

    4. If You Like It, Bring A Friend! - Of course, no one can know right away if they like it or not, certainly not before it's here to play. But if you find you DO like it, spread the word! Invite a friend, or find others on your server and team up with them. Create a cross world party if you meet someone you enjoyed playing with or thought was really good. I can't stress enough this is a golden opportunity to be among the first to try and learn a new (to FFXIV) PvP mode, and be the example others will see, and perhaps want to follow. So try it out, and if you like it, invite others to do the same!

    5. Have Fun! - I know that sounds weird to say, but I say it for a reason. Some will win, and some will lose, and no one is guaranteed to do either (except lose if you don't try). It's new content, at a time we don't have all that much as is, so HAVE FUN! Set aside any skepticism or cynicism, and approach it with an open mind. Yes, maybe it seems like this game or that game, maybe it's going to be more fun than Frontlines, or maybe not. Something might not work, something might work too well. . . But don't worry about that! Just give it a go, and have a good time.

That's all for now. I hope to see you around in there. Say hi if you do see me!

I think the patch notes will have a thorough enough explanation, but people who read the patch notes are a minority. It would be great if S-E could release promo trailers for new pvp modes with a voiceover that briefly explains the objectives and scoring and advertises the rewards. I've always wanted that. I think more people would stick with pvp and enjoy pvp if they knew what they were doing. People jump in with no prior knowledge, run around lost and confused, die and then say pvp sucks without ever knowing about the finer details. Some dedicated people in the community try to pick up the slack - I appreciate what you're doing, ThirdChild - but S-E could be doing a lot more to help and ensure the success of their content. There's no in-game tutorial akin to Hall of the Novice for pvp modes. Just kind of thrusts people in and assumes they've read all the rules and information on the lodestone.

A quick note that especially applies to the "l33t kr3w" in this game:

This is entirely NEW. It will be new for many people for weeks to come. Do not act like an Oracle & berate people for not knowing the minutiae of the game mode immediately. I don't care if you've been grinding it since the second servers opened - be civil to fellow players. Do not start saying, after a day, that everyone should be perfect because it's been out long enough.

Too late. Played two matches and debating whether I actually want to play anymore because all ANYONE does in chat is yell at each other. Literally not one line of helpful dialogue. Kinda sucks the fun out when you wanna know what's going on/to do and all anyone says is "you all suck."

Sometimes it can be hard to have fun when you are one of the few who has a bit of idea on what to do and you try your best to give advice/commands but no one listens at all.

I found myself stuck on what to do when I took an Oppressor, asked for protection, nobody came. Ended up dying lol. And matches would last the whole 20mins with a loss clear within the last 8-10mins. 20mins of dying or pacing because you don't want to go in and die.

Just made it harder to learn and enjoy it.. I'm sure it will get better when people learn how to play but I was never a fan of PvP with no matches with no direction.

Honestly, I predict that this will be a much better as a competitive game(I mean like Ranked Feast) with premades. That's when it will really shine.

EDIT: Maybe I'm just tired. Been a long day. The first 2 matches were a lot of fun. But then the next 2 drew out to 20min and I just was worn out and didn't want to play anymore.

I had a blast! But I have to admit, shot calling is really draining, plus it's hard to make the calls and fight at the same time.

Made me think an addition like Battlefield 4's Commander Mode would be handy. 1 extra player per side would be designated the Commander, and be able to see the entire match playing out from an overhead map, and be able to make strategic calls for the team.

Well, it CAN be done already just by simply keeping your map open (like I always used to say in Frontlines) and watching enemy movements. Still, RW is probably the most fun I've had PvPing since the "golden age" of Seize :P

Eh, it's already started, and it's only the second day. Mostly because there's too much emphasis on teamwork, with little way you can surmount it if one side gains an advantage. I expect the pro pvpers to ruin it for everyone in a week.

Let me make a special addition to this now.

All day yesterday I had people asking me questions. "How is it? Does it give XP? Are people toxic?" and so on. . . Look, don't worry about that. Try it out. Keep queueing. You might mess up at some point but it's fine. It's new. YOU'RE new. I lost my first match, but MAN was it fun! It doesn't take very long to learn either, and when in doubt, always at least attempt to do something helpful for your team. If someone wants to be mad, let them be mad. But don't let that stop you from either trying something new and fun, or continuing to do what you enjoy doing.
