It removes experience and standard mob drops. That's enough of a penalty.

If a "few months time" is a lot for you, then you should stop playing MMO games. At least RPG ones. Most people get bored of there being nothing to do after a short while, and there's nothing to do after a short while for them because the only content available is something that doesn't give them new shiny stuff better than what they had. If they had to wait for a year or more for new content, the game would be a complete wasteland...and closed.

Again, if that's what you think, then this genre is not for you. If your incentive is not getting better but having and sitting on the top gear at the time for infinity, then go to single-player games where you can max characters and gears, and then do as you please with them.

Raiding populations are low because raids are more challenging and require more ability to cooperate. Many people are unable to properly do the slightly harder dungeons, without taking advantage of the leeway they give.
Also, raids are where the hardcore players focus, and those players have very unfavorable opinions within the community. And getting a full raid of friends is something that only hardcore players can reasonably expect to get, ironically.

To begin with, only old dungeons are allowed to be made unsynced, anyway. And even then, unless there was an level cap increase, you will STILL need a party to actually clear the dungeons effectively. So yeah, unsynced does not decrease somethings value for many, many months.
