The issue with it only being super useful during prog is you spend all your pages and stuff gearing it up just to swap it out later so you'd need to gear an entirely different class. Maybe just a flat embolden buff would help bc its dps is somewhat lacking when played on the highest levels and it will get worse as our gear gets better.

In all fairness, Red Mage's gear does interact nicely with Summoner's needs.

Black Mages though, don't benefit from the same things as Red Mage. Our build hinges highly on having a lot of Spell Speed, something both SMN and RDM don't benefit too highly from... or at least, not to the point of necessity.

Once you reach the endgame as RDM, you suddenly start noticing that while your damage "looks" good, other players who are as skilled and well geared as you are will rapidly leave you in the dust in terms of damage. At the 75th percentile, only Bards are lower than you. At max damage, only Ninja is below you. The main difference is that both of these classes also provide a boat load of party support that only benefits the team... while you're stuck with only Embolden which leaves out your Healers in its buff.

Why should a good red mage do less damage than a good bard when red mage has less mobility and less utility than a bard?

What fight are you referring to specifically where rdm out-does ninja? 'cause the numbers I'm looking at show that, in o4s, RDM is barely more than bard until 90%, where bard overtakes it and rdm stays solidly last from 90 to 100%.

Because Disembowel and SE appearently hates casters. I was lurking on the JP forums for a bit and they had a thread just to talk about the balance issue of Physical powercreep vs Magical uselessness.
