I have to go with Yoshi on this one. I find text chat both easier to communicate by, especially with English not being my main language, and also somewhat more immersive. Also, voice chat makes it harder to concentrate on the fight at hand for me.
It would be no problem if one could simply opt to switch off mic or mic audio, but like Yoshi correctly says, that would divide and exclude players.

Voice-chat is something I hail as optional, always have. It is understandable in competitive games (such as shooters, MOBA etc) whereas for an MMORPG, there's really no call for it outside of, say, guilds or groups partaking in specific content. You'll find that in those games where Mic-options are added, a mentality grows amongst communities where said option magically becomes a 'mandatory' factor. It's even a heavy requirement to joining certain guilds as it is (even in games that do not have in-built comm options), which always puts me off as I don't see why I'd need to be yapping down a microphone to be eligible to join a guild that probably does 1/10 things where mic's are even helpful.

In short, those who regard it as a positive can avail of the wealth of communication programs out there. There's really no need to force it into the game just to remedy the need for an external program. The way it is now, those who prefer to use it can do so externally (which helps organizing methods with the users so that they aren't drowning eachother is incessant banter ie. their own rules), and those who prefer not to chat won't be made feel like they have to.

let me put it this way: The easiest way to get me to not want to socialize with you is to make me listen to the sound of your voice.

    it's
    1) distracting
    2) irritating.

I simply do not like socializing via voice chat. it's spoiled the mood on numerous occasions. I've even lost interest in FC's that I was otherwise starting to warm up to and enjoy once we started piling into voice chat every day. I don't have a thorough explanation for why yet other than that

    1) I can't listen to other things and you at the same time. it ruins concentration on either.
    2) most of you are probably not that pleasant to voice chat with. doubly so if you want me to sacrifice using my ears for effectively anything else for like 8 hours.
