It’s been pretty clear that I’m not a fan of PVP for PVPs sake in a few threads; I’m not a fan of games that are just combat for combat sake. Games like Overwatch, Destiny, and CSGo are known for their troublesome playerbase. However, there were a few games I felt got PVP correct that I found super enjoyable.
In Tera, where I met my RL boyfriend, they had some light hearted PVP instances that I absolutely loved. My two favorites were: Corsairs Stronghold and Kuma Asylum. I rarely ever had issues with players taking it too far, and people would spend hours doing these just for the fun of it.
In Corsairs Stronghold, it was basically a capture the flag system. Starting at level 30, you could participate and you and your items would be level synced to 60. You took turns defending or assaulting the castle’s crystal, or flag. Each side got fair turn, and the side with the shortest capture time won. If you were low level, or not very skilled at PVP, you could take control of a number of tanks or even use a self-destruct bomb. You’d have to respawn, but taking out a small group with your bomb was beyond satisfying, and hilarious. It was light hearted, fair, and teams typically were very sportsman like. It gave an opportunity to be part of the team even if you weren’t very good at PVP - I never got a high score in PVP, but i was great at getting spawn points and manning tanks to take out castle walls.
In Kumasylum, you have two teams. The first team is made up of players who have been turned into giants, consisting of two babies and their mother. Another team, a party of 10 normal races, go up against the giants. The team of three have some overpowered attacks, and it is a game of strategy, learning where to distract the giants in order to steal the Kuma’s Candy. It is located, hysterically, in a middle of a play place.
These instances I felt gave sportsman-like PVP where even those who weren’t very good at it could at least get a laugh. I would get a rush if I became a Kuma and eventually learned my role so well I became very good at it. Even if I lost, the environment and giggle worthy mayhem kept me happy and entertained.
I spent every weekend doing these not for the rewards or winning, but just for the experience. I would be more than happy to be part of an instance where three people get to play as boss monsters and a group of 10 has to defeat them. It’s the kind of stuff I could definitely get behind.
I don’t think I’d ever leave these instances either. They’re too much fun. Sadly, Tera is dying and we came here to FF14 for the similar cutesy environment. I just miss the instances they made where PVP was actually light hearted. Open-World PVP I cannot get behind; people group up and troll people trying to just get through storyline.
PVP with set objectives are my gamers crack.
