There are 2 options for successful game progression:

Make items and fights and contents scalable/unique.
    or
Make content at a pace where new content replaces old content in a timely manner making scalable content a non issue.

SE is doing none of the above. If new content doesn't replace old content at a pace to keep players from being bored and leaving, or making items and fights "scale" or "last longer" they are wasting man hours making content that is useless a month later with nothing to replace it for 5 months.

11 did this right, old gear was "unique" enough that it had a purpose in situations much later in the development of the game. Items with stats not commonly found on them from RELEASE made them useful and scalable. After YEARS, items were still good situationally. People would still go back and do that old content to get those items.

Currently there is nothing of the sort in FFXIV. Old content is useless. Wasting development time is all they are doing. They cant produce new content fast enough to do the "world of warcraft" development style where everything is outdated and a huge chunk of content is released every few months.

They should either ramp up development of new content to replace old content or start making items more unique stat-wise to "last longer" developmentally.

Should of done something like this.

    Goldsmithing Synth Rank 57
    x1 Aoelian Scimitar (Goblin NM)
x1 Bandit's Diamond (From Buffalo faction Humaniod Boss)
    x1 Ifrit's Horn (Ifrit)
    x1 Electrum Ingot (Wards)

    = x1 Jeweled Scimitar
    Dmg: 96
    Delay: 2.7

    Meldable
    Block + 7
    Dex + 7

Keeps 3 forms of content valid in the game at once. Crafting is involved. Materia is involved. The weapon is situationaly better (the dps on that is low but it increases blocks)
    Well said Doctor Mog, Xatsh.

What's so sad is that keeping the original Open World NMs (Dodore, Great Buffalo, Haughtpox, etc.) content and even Faction NM content "relevant" *isn't* that time consuming.

We all realize most of the Dev Team is busy making 2.0 and trying to make some new content for us currently (1.21, 1.22, etc.), but all it takes is 1 member of the Combat Team that's astute enough to look at the stats of current high level gear, and...

    * Adjust numerical values of currently existing NM / FNM Drops (probably in a spreadsheet).

    That's it.

Of course they have to think about Balance and making sure it won't overpower anything or outshine anything too much, but by adjusting some numbers of existing assets (like Aeolian Scimitar, Mosshorn, Champion's Lance, Harlequin, Templar, Buccaneer's Sets), they could actually keep this content relevant and alive for old and new players alike to partake in.

Faction Credits are rarely used nowadays, and the original Open World NMs are pretty much ignored / forgotten.

Having 1 Designer go in and adjust numbers (or as Vatsh is saying allow old drops to be used in 1 new recipe or 2) isn't going to derail development for 2.0.

Even with slight #'s adjustments, or allowing Materia Melding on U/U Drops, it would make their work on Dzemael Darkhold relevant again and a place for players to go back to and revisit. Right now, all that work (as recent as Patch 1.18 (Dzemael)) has been invalidated except by people wanting to get an Achievement.

If they took the time to create just 1 New "Item / Reward System" (e.g., like the partial Open World, partial Instanced SKY from XI - a system of getting Trigger NMs, Items from NMs, Items from Bosses, Craftable Drops that make something even better, etc.), it would go a long way to keeping these Patches relevant until 2.0.

And the new "Item / Reward System" could still be relevant in 2.0 (e.g., they could move whatever Trigger NMs, Bosses into the new World Redesign and keep the Items as well).

It's certainly better than our current pattern of "New Patch = 1 Primal Fight with standalone, Themed Weapons, in a basic Arena."
