Just out of curiosity, what was the WoW scam asking for? I hardly doubt that knowing that Meow McFace of Malboro name is Mark is going to do anything that endangers that account.

At this point, i couldn't tell you. It's been at least a year (or so) since i remember seeing it on the forums.
The only things i remember of it was the general flow of the cover letter (the forum post itself); how it talked up the game and that's why they chose it as a the focus of the survey, along with a possible reward off the blizzard store for interviewees.
And you're right, knowing the information he's asking for on the sheet here may not be any danger to anyone, but the whole thing reminded me enough of the thing from the WoW forums that i felt the desire to post about the similarity. I mean, if this is on the level and people only end up helping a University student, then that's great; and he'll only miss out on talking to a few people that chose to be cautious.

It even doesn't have to be a serious scam like taking something from you - money or your account (even that it is theoretically possible if the mail you wrote in the questionnaire is your SE account mail, so they will know your characters and the associated e-mail).
Enough that some random person makes a base of FFXIV characters and associated e-mails, sells it to adv companies or uses by themselves to annoy you with more commercial spam.

Which is why, when filling out surveys, always use your junk email. That’s what I do usually. I have emails for surveys and crap stores want you to fill out/hound you about, emails for websites/social media, and then I have my personal emails I don’t share with anyone except important contacts/school.

    Absolutely

I think people are being a little paranoid. I can see almost all of the information on YOU just by looking ta your post here, character name, server, possible nickname and how old your character likely is. Wont take me a second to find out a likely email with google too.

That seems to be more baseline for an economics class. Also game have been a media source since 1980.

sorry but something isn't right with this.

no one really being paranoid, the class he/she is doing this for don't match the subject matter. Why would an english class need to know if ppl buy fantasias or not? isn't that more for economics?

I’m pretty sure they said it was for their senior seminar. The senior seminars at my university require one to do a research project. So, in that context, it makes perfect sense.

Edit: The seminars are independent of one’s major. For my university, it’s actually a requirement for graduating.

Senior Seminars were the same at my high school so many years ago. It was a pain to do, but many of us did it then. Imagine that, being unable to get a diploma, after putting in so much work and effort already, because you failed this Seminar that was thrust upon you at the last minute, like our was. As you say, though, it's nothing to do with any sort of major.
