Those servers are incredibly barebones lol. SE would not own the servers, they would be renting them. The "services" likely don't mesh with SE's needs either.

This is more of a hosting site than an actual datacenter for clients to have their servers in. Great if you only need 1 or 2 physical boxes to host your applications on.

SE has multiple RACKS worth of servers, this would cost them a fortune.

    $1500 a month for 2 terabytes on a SAN. That's utterly ridiculous.

Also, all caps doesn't make your post more informative, just more annoying to read. This isn't the F-you Fridays rage thread.

These are great ideas, but they're really not applicable to a large company like Square Enix trying to provide a service such as Final Fantasy XIV, and other related services. Instead of renting individual servers, or instances on shared servers (yikes!), they rent entire racks or even a suite at a colocation.

I did a quick little google search. This is an example of what server racks look like in a data center:

So SE would likely renting space in these "towers" (which are called racks), to hold their own equipment. Additionally, they are likely to already have their own solutions to mitigating DDoS attacks. Now, one can argue their effectiveness, but the service is still up and usually consistent. Suffice to say, I think they know what they're doing. And what's with the 1000 character limit? I had a lot more to say lol.

The DDoS isn't against SE in particutlar. XIV has been caught up in the disruption of Level3 and other backbone/ISP services resulting from the DDoS against their platforms. And every hosting service, regardless of scale, has DDoS mitigation procedures in place if they want to be successful. The problem with these kinds of attacks is that it's difficult to defend against- the traffic "looks" legitimate, and it comes in huge quantities from an ever-changing army of devices and addresses. It's also cheap to launch too, and can be done from anywhere. It's the best way to be a PItA with minimal risk of being caught. So while we're here stewing and getting mad the execs at SE have probably been furious for days, since anything that negatively impacts the customer experience is basically a huge black mark against your service and reputation- even if you have little to no control over how or why it's happening.

Totally agree with putting the servers in a more central location though. Flip-flopping who gets a sub-par connection instead of equalizing it for everyone was dumb. RIP my fun NIN experience. However, datacentre relocation takes years to negotiate and follow through on on top of the massive costs, so SE will probably keep them where they are now until the game shuts down. They really did have to move out of Montreal to keep up with the growth of the game but now that they can mostly reliably provide service to the intended recipients at their definition of "good enough", CA is where we will be connecting to unless something goes horribly, horribly wrong there.
