Gau wasn't a blue mage....
He was a beast master... beast mimic maybe even
If you chose a MOB... he became that MOB... even down to their regular attacks
Gau definitely wasn't a blue mage

Actually, that one bolded instance of Blue Mage there does uses swords! And shields! AND heavy armor, though not all of themIts funny that so many people want to see blue mage with a sword....
It's obviously because the only games Blue mage was EVER relevant (FFXI, Tactics advance) had him using a sword
way before that it was:
-after a wind crystal shattered
-using Stragos' "Lore" (He used rods, flails and daggers)
-using materia
-Quistis used a whip
-Quina Quen used a fork
-Kimahri was a lancer/blue mage
In fact Blue Mage with a sword is a fairly new concept
The reason I dont think Blue mage should be a sword user is simple
The armoury system is weapon based
As of right now... SO MANY possible jobs use swords
Of all the advanced Jobs I can name... at least 50% of them would seem best as sword users. But not every job can use a sword (balance), So SE would have to be creative with weapons for each Job.
Blue Mage is easy though... make it a job for another class.... People think it HAS TO have a sword but I think we've just seen that it doesn't.
OR
Add a whip class (Remember "Flayer" was in the .DATS?) and make Blue mage a job of it
But yes, afterwards in games that did not have switchable jobs they tended to have different weaponry. I'd say you can't count Materia since everybody used everything there but-
Regardless, Blue Mage with swords is as old as FFV, where I believe Blue Mage was first introduced? I can be wrong in there.

I didn't mean it couldn't use swords... the point I was making is that it is like 7 in that every weapon could be a Blue mage but thats not feasible in FFXIV. So I was only really pointing out games where Blue Mage was locked to one weapon (or at least favored one weapon)
with that being said....
What do you guys think about Blue Magic not being a class but being learned by anyone... maybe even with materia
Actually, I just favor XI's arabian kilij sword type bluemages over whips. :P
Pugilist deal with elemental arts as well as blm

Why on earth do i need to level Gladiator for White Mage? That makes no sense. Anyone that enjoys playing a healing class isn't likely to ever touch a class like Gladiator, except for any useful abilities but still, all this does is force people to play classes they wont enjoy, not impressed. THM would have made more sense.

What about the actions you need to live after you decide to try holy out on ifrit or moogle? Those def+ actions could be useful, and of course aegis boon for some extra HPWhy on earth do i need to level Gladiator for White Mage? That makes no sense. Are you seriously complaining about leveling a class to 15? 15, really? that doesn't take any time at all.

I doubt there is many without almost all classes at least 20+ at this point, even so I find it a very odd decision to have the 2 mages jobs have sub reqs from classse that makes no real sense, for example having BLM require 30 thm and 15 cnj would make sense since cnj has the other half of the elemental spells...
Then again not surprising with this game's refusal to do anything that might even slightly mimic a system from XI no matter how much sense or how good whatever such system would be (elemental wheel says hello?).
Not realy complaining, just pondering whats up with theese occasional decisions devoid of logic :> For any new player this games class system has to be getting more and more confusing by each patch.
"Let's see... So in order to become a more efficiant caster of elemental magic, I need too... Train in hand-to-hand combat? O.o?!"
