    Here's the thing:
If you actually want to put the effort into getting 3x/4x/5x Tier 4 materia into a single gear then that makes it loads better.

It's a hard feat, it costs materials every time you fail so crafters will still have to make all that gear.
Gathering classes will still have to farm the materials for melding.
People will still need crafted gear to convert into materia.

So no, nothing is really effected by the AF gear, and difficulty of obtaining the AF will play a role as well. There's always going to be a demand for crafted gear so long as there's people who are wanting better gear than AF.
Plus this is all based on the current game economy....Which is not diverse enough imo.

How will the AF gear be obtained ?

If we look at FFXI SE has done this 3 different ways. I hope they don't go the AF2 way with years of farming dynamis to get a set with horrible drop rates. It would be fine if they went the abyssea or AF1 route.

AF1 obtained by quests/coffer key hunts, which mostly were talk to npcs, find a ??? / trade item to a ??? / kill NM / kill countless mobs for coffer keys open the chest and get your AF

    AF2 Random drop from dynamis.

AF3 Found in abyssea, kill some easy popable NM several times till you have enough seals / upgrade items for the piece you wanted. Each NM could drop 4 seal types. Tedious but easy to do and you could get the piece of gear you wanted fairly quickly. This was one of the better systems.

You can get Relic from Dynamis...like crazy. I never leave a zone without 10+ armors lol. You only spent "years farming" the first year it was released, you did Dynamis for relics (weapons), armor was an added bonus.

Trial of magians is probably the route they're going with as its a long (and sometimes challenging) set of quests.

I think i remember reading somewhere that the set for 1.21 will be obtained through the questline - assuming the lv 50 quest. I expect the quests to be challenging, at least at the level of the quest - particularly the lv 50 one.

We shall see. I definitely hope for a fun, challenging, thematic solo quest series though.

So if AF armor comes from a solo quest series (which we all know given our experience of solo quests in FFXIV will be neither fun or challenging), what is in the 2 dungeons?

Or is it like Darkhold, useless.

I would hope a harp. So I can use something other than my voice on Bard. But I'm afraid that'd fall under Job-specific weapons, which we don't get yet..

But you have a point, unless the dungeon gear is meldable, it does seem like there's going to be competition between AF gear vs. new dungeons and/or primal weapons vs. new dungeons. :/

I could have sworn I read this too, which is what I was basing my post on, but I can't seem to find the dev post now for the life of me. I started to think maybe I imagined it until you posted this. I wonder where it went...

It certainly is possible they will make these new quests difficult and requiring a party, but I have my doubts about that.

I'd like a solo/group mix, but there was talk of facing npcs and other nm monsters for the quests (skills and AF).

They have been spending much more time on these quests for the jobs than any other sort of side-quests we've been getting. That's why I don't find it to be a far stretch of the mind to expect these to be on another tier when it comes to quest challenge.

As for the dungeons, despite what we may think, JSE won't be the only high level gear we continue to get. Besides, the job quests aren't giving the weapons. i think the weapons themselves aren't even gonna be in 1.21. So any new class weapons, as well as gear overall can be expected of the new dungeons.

    We'll see what happens.

What they could be doing is adding special stats to the job gear like double attack and haste and latent effects or whole set effects and let crafted materia stick with the basic materia stats
