I'm a GSM, and I really liked the idea of giving these two items away to newlyweds, so I was really disappointed to find out that they don't snap together when put on the same table. More disappointing is that there isnt one button to play both at the same time. Would it be to difficult to put them together?

well you can place them side by side, they play different parts to a song, one meant to be played one after the other

But they aren't. One of them is a melody while the other is a harmony. If I play one without the other they sound empty, and if I start one right after the other, they are out of sync and sound horrible.

Then maybe the point is that you need two people working together (each click on one simultaneously) for them to properly harmonize, rather than someone being able to do it alone. Which is kind of a beautiful sentiment if you think about it.
