Communication is everything. Social interaction is a waning trait (skill?) among people (especially younger generations) these days. You have to be able to get past your personal issues/mindset if you want to meet the goals you've set for yourself. If you can't step out of your comfort zone you shouldn't expect anything from anyone else. That's just how it is.

That being said, it's all trial and error. Gotta sift through the trash until you find like minded people you click with. I played this game when it originally released and quit shortly after. Came back after the relaunch because an IRL friend said it was much better. He ended up quitting a month or so later due to IRL priorities so I had to make new friends. Been with my group ever since then and haven't looked back. Even friends with them IRL and somewhat involved with each other's lives.

It's not hard to make friends. Just put the effort in and don't sweat the small stuff. As some have recommended, VOIP is a great way to interact with others, but to each their own. Some find it easier to just type in game. Just get out there and try.
