When I tank (which is only on expert roulettes and trials for the mount achievement) I generally just estimate how much and how fast I can pull based on the healer's mana. Personally don't care what the dps do as long as they dps. If they pull before and die before I can gain aggro, that is on them for being impatient (doesn't happen very often).

Point being, the tank should set the pace to start and the dps/healer determines if the pace picks up or slows down.

In FFXI and WoW the rule was simple.

Give about 5 to 10 seconds at the start of the fight for the tank to gain hate then start dps.
I can debunk that as both a RNG and a THF as well as playing BRD in FFXI, that this is not true.

Ranged usually pulls to group > tank grabs with provoke > dps should be able to start wailing on it depending on how far or close. Time is a game with +exp bonus modifiers when you get to 55+ in ToAU areas. But I can understand the rest of the information. Just wanted to note that it was very different in xi than it is in xiv lol

I usually only notice this when I'm on my new character below level 60, that people pull more for me than the normal pace of the dungeon (cause my gear is either lacking or I'm being lazy lol). Doesn't happen much on expert cause I usually pull to the final wall and pop all my cd's and heals and hold aggro with no issues xD

As a summoner I always try to wait for the tank to pull and establish hate. The only time this gets troublesome is when its hard to figure out when the tank is done pulling the mobs. It helps if the tank lets the party know if hes doing small or large pulls first.

I find the most difficult situations when the tank pauses as if he is done pulling, lingers a long while then starts up again to the next pack of mobs, leaving my pet in attack mode to be shut off again before I move to next pack of mobs and my wasted Bane and bubble, not to mention I'm in mid cast and have to run, my cds are now all off timed and my AOE's will mostly be still in cd for a full rotation and definitely means wasted Bahamut if I am opening with him.

So this means that I will have to manually apply all of my DOTs to each individual mob in the next pack, while the first pack may or may not have remaining dots on them and this just makes for a hot mess and wasted dps.

Other than that, I prefer waiting for the tank to get sufficient hate on all of his mobs because if he doesn't I will, which isn't good since I am squishy. So yes it is best to let the tank do his / her thing first before we start dps.

I cant speak for WoW but I don't think you ever played ffxi. Tanks rarely pulled in XI, it was generally ranged classes like thf, rng, or brd and the tank would pull hate off that person and caster would start primary casts as the mob was still en route to the party. The tank established hate, while dps were fully engaged. This was even true in ffxiv version 1 when leveling parties were set up a lot like ffxi parties.

So nice try but don't use a game it sounds like you never played as an example.

At this point pulling large packs isn't speed running, its normal mode. If you are keeping hate while the healer is sitting on their hands and still refuse to pull more than 3 mobs at a time when you have aoe dps that is a clear cut case of diva tank, lazy tank or troll tank. Take your pick.
