You'll basically skip everything, while you can get review cutscenes later on that's only a few pieces of story. You'll be missing none reviewable scenes if you use the story jump
Yeah, my understanding is that it sets all the story quests to "completed", it gives you any titles/mounts/minions you would have earned along the way(but not all the armor and other assorted stuff), and puts you in one one of the grand companies if you arent already(defaults to the city your character started in). It also tags the required dungeons and trials as completed, letting you basically jump right in to the start of the next tier of content. You can open the "completed" tab in your quest journal and read the short synopsis of any of the 500ish quests(i dont feel like looking up the actual number) you skipped. And using "The Unending Journey" interactable furniture item(from an inn room if your house/fc doesnt also have one) you can rewatch the important cutscenes(and many of the unimportant ones, but they arent all on there and this only gives access to cutscenes and not other character interactions).
Basically, if you like(or think you might later) the story i highly advise not buying the story skip potion. Level skip is a personal choice, but experiencing the story second hand is just not the same. And if you take the time leveling takes out of the equation, you can go through the story a lot faster then you might think. Playing something like 10 hours a week(doable by all but the most casual of players) and focusing just on the story, you can clear the base game along with the first expansion and everything leading into and out of both in a roughly 6-8 weeks(if we arent counting leveling it may even be a little less then this). It will be 3+ months before the next major patch, so that timeline would even give you time to get through the newest expansions current level of story. If the patch is late, youd likely even have time to get completely geared up to dive right in on patch 4.2. And that math was for a new player. It looks like you(OP) are already more then halfway through that content. Ultimately the choice is yours.
Honestly my read on this is its meant for people who make a new char but already finished the MSQ or associated lore etc.
If you've not gone through it...you shouldn't skip it.
Not that anything prevents you from skipping it. It IS worth it...at least once.

thanks guysI do enjoy the story, but It's the 80 or so patch quests that are putting me off haha, I checked and I have about 40 quests till the end of the HW set but another 80 seems like an awful lot
Personally i would try to push through. The end of the Dragonsong story is great, and the events that set in motion the SB expansion are pretty intense. The questline at 60 is half as long as the one at 50 was(i think i counted 45 3.x quests compared to 100 2.x quests). Only 1 or 2 trials and 4 or 5 dungeons(plus a few solo duties and some running around). And the dungeons and trials can now be run unsynced if you dont mind giving up a bit of exp and dont want any challenge. One or two level 70 friends can easily bring you through all the dungeons. Not sure what a small party would need to look like for the trials, but they arent too bad if you just run them normally through DF.
what my friend did was he got the level jump and went through the story without any blockages. he could solo dungeons if he wanted or grabbed one of us to join him unsynced to rush through them and enjoy the cut scenes. If you like the story but don't want to wait on level and gear grinding getting the level jump might help just so you don't burn out grinding up levels and gear. Though seeing your level 54 (lancer?) it might just be better to grabs some good mates and press through.
Coming in as a new player I do agree the patch quests we're a little annoying as I had hyped myself up for heavensward after ultima weapon only to find I needed 100 quests before I got there. I wished they'd change up these patch quests to at least give u exp to help new players push past old content better. If ur already past 2.x(was my least favorite storyline) I highly recommend pushing through all of heavensward and storm blood because I believe they improved their story telling by a ton. But story in a mmo isn't for everyone so if you don't particularly care getting to end game faster with a jump isn't a bad option.
