What is the point of keeping this archaic system in place other than laziness?

Have a message too long and you have to cut it down and add the rest in through editing. Too short and it won't let the post go through so you can edit it. There's no reason to have to play goldilocks.

It's not as important as in game features for sure, but it just comes off every time I see it as lazy.

The only spam I see is the people that don't know about the edit post character bypass.

Yeah, this is the only forum I've seen with that type of limit in place. It's a bit comical.

It's funny because the system itself promotes spam. Like Strywin says, lots of OPs without knowing that, would create a thread followed by a couple of posts below. Since they don't know that they can bypass the char limit by editing them. They may as well remove it, it's an annoyance more than anything.

Well, if the Beta forums had never been spammed to hell and back by over-zealous testers we wouldn't be in this mess here either (the spam and flaming on the Beta forum really was bad, and SE added similar posting restrictions there to try and bring some order to the chaos, and thus then later added such restrictions here on the official forum when ARR launched as well, probably in an attempt to head off a repeat happening here). 'This is why we can't have nice things' and all that.

Sure the posting limit can be annoying, but how hard is it to copy the whole post, trim it down to a few sentences, then go back and edit in the rest? It at least makes you think about what you're saying rather than posting 'off the cuff' (although I admit it doesn't stop that entirely, something even I've been guilty of at times).

This isn't beta, our forum accounts are connected to the accounts we play on/pay for. The moderators can ban an account and it has a real affect on the player. It's time to move past whatever happened in the testing phase with non-invested users and adjust. When you see "You can edit your post to bypass the character limit" multiple times a day, there's something wrong.
