Like wise if you can smash it in 2:50 AND next time the 3 minutes us up while the dummy still has 3% health it's a clearly visible and measurable decrease in your performance..

Oy that is technically true for the whole game. It also fails to serve the purposes of a damage meter. To show you the numbers. Seeing the actual numbers lets you see how big your epeen is, compare it to others at a glance and determine whose is bigger and better and whose is limp and pathetic. It also makes determining why you're killing things faster by showing you what's the bread and butter of your rotation that you really really don't want to eff up. As well as allow you to more easily experiment and see the actual results so you can build off of that.
