mini events to get you to spend cashSame can be said for Everquest 1 and other games from the period. They changed a lot to the game to make it new player friendly, but even with those changes there was no wave of new players beating the doors down to the servers looking to play them. Also I've played a good number of FTP games and they're always being updated. It might not always be in the form of major content. Those kinda updates come maybe every couple of months. The regular updates are more or less mini events and things to keep players busy and active while waiting for major updates.when ppl talk updates they mean major patches. i played 28 f2p mmo.

isnt ff11 still going and sub based game?

Letter from the Producer LIVE Part IX Q&A Summary (10/30/2013)
Q: Will there be any maintenance fees or other costs for housing, besides the cost of the land and house?
A: In older MMOs, such as Ultima Online, there was a house maintenance fee you had to pay weekly, but in FFXIV: ARR we decided against this system. Similarly, these older MMOs also had a system where your house would break down if you didn’t log in after a while in order to have you continue your subscription, but this is a thing of the past and we won't have any system like that.

I wish FF11 was f2p as I don't mind playing it sometimes for nostalgia reasons. Game has no future as no incoming expansions said so by SE yet people are still paying the sub for it. Boggles my mind.

I remember this all being said about jump potions, they would never do it, it would make all their older content obsolete, would have an influx of players no knowing how to play their jobs, its not going to happen. Then one dark and stormy night Yoshi-P mentioned they might consider putting in jump potions if there was a need for it, then POOF! the next expansion had jump potions. I suspect the exact same thing will happen this year, that will be the big reveal at fan fest, the hybrid F2P model and the beginning of the end of a sub. They have already set the ground work by nerfing to the ground the vet rewards and discontinuing them. I don't think they will go straight up F2P right away but they will have some form of it where maybe the game is free up to the end of Heavensward or ARR or something like that or there is some bonus you get for paying a sub that f2p players will not have.
I don't want to be right but if we get out of all three fan fests with no mention of some form of free to play model then I will happily eat my words. Please SE, prove me wrong but it sure looks like the writings on the wall...

Considering they haven't so much as mentioned it at all recently? (in like, years) I doubt we'll be hearing about it anytime soon.I remember this all being said about jump potions, they would never do it, it would make all their older content obsolete, would have an influx of players no knowing how to play their jobs, its not going to happen. Was released on October 3rd 2017, so, a year. They wouldnt do it mid expansion, it would be something they would do at the beginning with an influx of new players. Also, what better time to introduce a hybrid model than alongside the release on xbox and switch.
Technically the Jump Potions already existed in the Chinese version of the game so it wasn't something that was randomly thought up. Yoshi also has no control over what goes on to the MogStation so if the people in charge think something should go on there (because its profitable), then that's what they'll do. Making the game F2P however would take a lot more planning as there is a lot more profit involved, but hey if the game goes down that path in China then you never know. But for now I think we'll be sticking to a sub based model, with FFXI being a good example of this after all that time.

Honestly at 5.0 they really need to do a few things if they want to make some proper money.
1. Some content/instance/zone etc. that allows people to try level 80 jobs before they invest a jump potion in a job that they are stuck with for tons of hours
2. Better job potion and levelling potions e.g. reduced Stormblood potion costs and/or better pricing for ONE potion to be ready for 5.0
3. New jobs have jump potions so existing players can create alts on new jobs to have a different experience.
4. Stop messing around and deal with the 2.X quests. either 1) shorten it by 75% or 2) make everything to 2.55 part of the free trial.
