A very early version of a software product that may not contain all of the features that are planned for the final version. Typically, software goes through two stages of testing before it is considered finished. The first stage, called alpha testing, is often performed only by users within the organization developing the software. The second stage, called beta testing , generally involves a limited number of external users.
so beings that beta is planned for almost a year from now and they are still adding key feature that makes this alpha, pretty easy to understand.
although the definiton says "is often performed only by users within the organization" it is not defined by that because it says "is often" not "all the time"

Syntaxlies, you forgot "Open Beta" which I think is where FFXIV is in.... Open betas are from a larger group to the general public and anyone interested. The testers report any bugs that they find, and sometimes suggest additional features they think should be available in the final version.
i would say open beta if they were not redoing the mechanics of the game. We are in the game development stage which is defined as alpha. beta would mean the game has been fully developed and are only looking for bugs.Syntaxlies, you forgot "Open Beta" which I think is where FFXIV is in.... this is my last post on this subject if it helps people to deny the truth and see the game through white knight glasses then there's really nothing i can say on this topic.

It's being overhauled, which is quite different from an Alpha stage -- Alpha is still barely past the conceptual stages of building a game. FFXIV Alpha was an Alpha stage.
I can see, and understand your point of view. And as a wise women once said. "To each there own" ^_^
Why the hell people keep on debating about this???
Who cares...really...??? beta or not just play the damn game...
wish there was option to hide threads... orz
