I don’t know if you ever played the original Bayonetta, but that game had checkpoints during actual boss fights. It was actually one of the most brilliant acts of game design I’d ever seen. I wish every mmo had it.
And its far easier than Ultimate Coils.
Checkpoints are BOTH ease of life, and difficulty.
Mental fatigue is part of the difficulty.
Most "Difficult games" are roughly on par with susano in difficulty. (Like Dark Souls, Bloodborne, etc. But of course the genre is different, so its still comparing apples to oranges)
The difference is that we play an MMO far longer than we play those "hardcore" games, and in turn, are better than we would be, if we put the same limited amount of time into this game.
Find someone whos never played an MMO before, and 7 other like minded people, and make them play their new job at Lv70, for 2 hours. Then throw them into Susano.
The amount of time it will take them to finally clear the fight, should be roughly on par, if not longer, than the time it takes to beat a boss in an equally hard solo game.
So my point is, if we're already past the point of "Difficult" and have tiers higher, like shinryuu, O3S, then O4S, there's only so much more "difficult" that can be thrown into the mix.
Lack of check points are one method.
Another is RNG. (which annoys people even more than lack of check points.)
And 100% absolute perfection. (Which in a game that doesnt have a 100% stable connection to half the players, also not reasonable.)
No matter what method is used, it sure as heck wont feel "comfy", its going to be stressful.
(Unless ur like me, and dont care if u do well or not, and dont mind dieing over and over. Which is part of the reason my group is so slow to progress, as we only clear through doing it so many times, its impossible to mess up anymore.)
