Usually whenever I try to offer advice to sprouts in mentor roulette it tends to inspire the kiddos to "prove me wrong" by showing me how topaz carbuncle totally does help the tank do tanking better.

I still run the roulette fairly often purely to help fill for healers who've abandoned whatever the heck duty. It gives me something to do.

A big chunk of a Mentor's role, other than to provide assistance when asked, is to run the Mentor roulette. And that means, ultimately, that Mentors are meant to help fill queues, let's not kid ourselves about that portion of the system's purpose. And given we're meant to fill queues, they kind of had to lock something as shiny as the mount behind a ridiculous amount of roulettes, because no one in their right minds would run the damned thing half as many times willingly otherwise, not when you're likely to go into group that will disband, refuse to listen to advice and be nasty to you, or be content you absolutely despise but hey you queued as dps and it finally popped, you're not asking questions.
So yes, you're going to get people who don't care about being a Mentor in here just for the mount. And that's a problem. But from my experience, people who mentor will do so regardless of their crown status, and people who don't give a damn will not give a damn regardless of crown. The problem isn't the horse, so much as finding a way to keeping the latter out of the system.

The bigger problem IMO is people with your mindset that give off the impression that everyone needs to have their hand held and be treated like a delicate snowflake. People wont learn if you just give them all the answers beforehand so they don't have to think or utilize problem solving skills to resolve their own issues. The same way you claimed someone else's example could be taken as offensive the same examples you gave "hey mind oi give you some advice?" "want tips?" can be taken as offensive just as easily. I honestly don't care if someone thinks I am being rude as long as they understand what I am saying to them because I value getting the point across over "political correctness". Additionally there's the fact that pretty much anything and everything is going to be rude or offensive to someone so ultimately there isn't any point to candy coating things.

I have a younger brother who has autism. He generally learns from doing and observation. Reading things doesn't really get the point across to him which was more than a slight hinderance since school was pretty much textbooks and chalkboards. My family still pushed values on him to actively think and solve his own problems. He might have repeated the same mistake multiple times before he figured it out but it remains he was able to figure it out himself.

In the end my stance on mentoring is to allow people to find a solution on their own. If they ask for advise or ask questions I have no issues providing an answer. This is because the solution they came up with was to ask someone for help. I do not promote the idea of providing all the answers before someone even has the chance to attempt figuring it out on their own. Done too much this creates a dependency of or expectation that everything will be provided for them which ends up being detrimental to their development as a person in general.

    Maybe it's server related?

Like, personally I find it pretty bad on Omega now. And most of the mentors I came across here were also not really that friendly.

Maybe it's just bad luck and bad server choice.. but I'm not going to leave here, not while I was fortunate enough to get the house I wanted in Shirogane.

I read what you wrote and understood it, I just didn't agree with it.

My example is about a hypothetical situation. Of course you tailor the information based on the context of what you're trying to explain. I'm not going to post a huge diatribe on how to dodge a specific mechanic just to use as an example.

If you or your gf feel attacked by someone typing "We need to stand in the purple aoe or we'll get hit by an earthquake and take damage." I really don't know what to say and I'm sorry you feel that way but that's the nature of running content and this game may not be for you.

    Have fun out there. Peace.

EDIT: To the above poster: You may be right, plus I have a pretty long play time to pull bad experiences from. If you need help with anything though, let me know.

I was told by a sprouts that by explaning the tactics for boss fight, I was ruining their gameplay. Few times I even got the good ol verbal abuse from sprouts for helping them out. So now whenever I join a group with a sprout, I will tell them that I am mentor and if he/she has questions, I will answer them. Majority of the time, there is a silence, no response from anyone. The only time that I will give advice (might feel forced) is when I notice a player not using certain spells, an example a Dragoon that does not use Heavy Thrust or when the group wipes, because majority are not familiar with the fight.

People complain about the mentors and its often justified, but lets not pretend that all sprouts are innocent or that mentors are silent, because they do not care about the community or their duty.

Oh yes that's true, especially the ones that don't say a single word at all.

I know like 90% of the roulettes like the back of my hand, I don't need a fancy crown to give advice.. but indeed a lot of the sprouts just don't care, don't play their job correctly, keep wiping and don't say a word at all, not even reading the advice I give.

I'm a sprout and I don't feel any type of way against mentors. It's reassuring to run into them in duties and whatnot because I expect them to know their stuff and they do. I actually started playing two years ago and there were no mentors/novice network and such. It was very bad for people like me then who had ZERO knowledge, ZERO experience playing MMOs. Now that there's this mentor system in place, there's a forum where I can ask my noob questions 'cause back then I was like WTH is MT, OT, aggro, hate, DPS, DOT, all that crap? Where in the game were those even mentioned? And people got really rude with you when you don't know your stuff.

Anyway mentors now, when they do what their role is meant to, they're very helpful. Just treat them as resource people, veterans who have gained a wealth of experience and information. Don't treat them like social workers who will take your hand and hold it every step of the way.

is this even a thing? LOL, last time i check most mentor even if they don't admit it SPAM the hell out of Ifrit (hard) , 5 sec trail.
since HW getting a mentor status has been reduce to this:

    1000 Dungeon: Ifrit (hard)
    Lv60: Tank, Healer, Tank : PotD + Arcanis + Tank = lv60: SMN,SCH and Tank.
300 Player Commendation: RNG- really, some people may click on you and leave. Just because you help them does no guaranteed a commendation.
