    Spoilage in FFXIV?

I've been playing a lot of survival games lately with inventory management and risk of items spoiling being a pretty key mechanic in it's core gameplay. I was kicking the idea around in my head of perishable items in FFXIV spoiling turning into either an end all product such as rot or a different kind of material for other unique recipes. Maybe it might give gathering and crafting another layer of depth along with giving things that players make more value because they are only temporary and need to be used within a certain amount of time. Maybe even extend that to gear where you can only repair it so many times before you have to replace it. At that point you could make repairs a little more costly by making them cost materials as well as gil to repair. Remove dark matter from npc vendors too. Would give more value to dark matter and other players being able to repair your gear. This is probably a terrible idea but something fun to think about.

It adds as much depth as perhaps durability, and with that I mean none at all. It would purely exist to become a hindrance to the player and that sucks. The only people this would affect would be endgame since at any other level you will constantly swap out your gear for better gear anyway. So it does not even add much value to these gathering and crafting classes. This is not a survival game, this is an mmorpg.

Crafters already work their rears off in order to be able to fix our gear while on the field, if it'll be any harder than it already is a lot of people will shy away from it. There's an argument to be had about how this will affect the economy, but I don't think SE should intentionally make changes - mind, not introduce new systems, but changes to existing systems - that will make people shy away from them.
Then we have the simple fact of the matter that a lot of people stop playing the game on a regular basis for various reasons, ranging from simply growing bored of the game between patches (something Yoshi-P himself condoned if only because it lessens the strain on the servers between releases) to outright having money issues and therefore can't afford to resub. Knowing their hard earned items and gear will not be there when they return will give them less motivation to come back at all. As for gear, people already complain there's too little reason to gear up, and now you want that hard earned gear to survive even less than it does.
It's not a bad idea, but it's bad for FFXIV as it currently is.

I also haven't bathed once in the entirety of my adventuring career. I was getting pretty ripe until I learned to swim. Now I'm not quite as bad but yeah, still stink. Thanks to magics no one around me can see that my clothes are actually covered in blood stains (mine and others) so I don't have to worry about getting accused of murder every time I come back to town. Not that many actually want to be around me thanks to the smell.

And now you want me to worry about spoiled food, and rotting gear too?

    *sigh*

I was mostly thinking on having more of some sort of interactivity with items that can be gathered or crafted outside of their current uses Like being able to change the property of items outside of gathering would be a better wording of what I want over spoilage. Spoiling could be one possible thing among others. As for durability of gear being more costly I was just thinking about how gil in this game gets passed between players and never really leaves players unless for repairs cost very little, teleports, and housing. I want more gil sinks that involve fun mechanics but not to the point of making players broke unless there was is high risk high reward scenario like actual gambling (gold saucer pls). Overall I just want Yoshi to try different things and not stick with the same formula they've stuck with going from patch to patch. I'll gladly give up content like dungeons or 24 man raids we've already done a ton of before for something that changes core mechanics of the game.

I was willing to agree to disagree until there. Dungeons and Raids are the fundamental content of MMORPGs and I sure as heck won't give up content I enjoy for another annoying gil sink that doesn't even give me something different to do.

Maybe Eureka will be what you're waiting for- it's supposed to be a brand-new game mode that does something different. Not to say I wouldn't like new stuff too, but I still like to see new dungeons and 24-mans every so often. If I didn't like them I wouldn't be here, you know?

Survival games are based around survival. This game is not based around survival. This suggestion only ever have been in MMO's like this if there was an item shop with an item that would instantly restore/prevent deterioration when repairing.

So yeah, I don't want to see a system made for satisfying greedy publishers whims made into a subscription-based MMO, just because someone feels like doing something more with items. Though, frankly, it does not even serve that purpose. It just means that you waste time doing anything unless you are going to use that. And it will end up with players greedily stockpiling equipment, which will be a lot more toxic. After all, who would want to end up without any decent weapon just cause their last one broke?!

Considering how fun a new dungeon or new 24 man raid usually ends up being after a week, especially when it offers gear inferior to what you currently have making you run it once a week at best I would trade that for something more fun especially if it lasts for several patch cycles. I'm wondering how long it takes to develop a new expert dungeon and what exactly we gave up in 4.1 for the new content they're bringing us in 4.11 and 4.15.

Discard all your items except gear and similar. Discard new ones after a while every so often. Discard your gear when it reaches maximum spiritbond. There, you have your spoilage, have fun with it.

For vast majority of people, it is anything but fun. And you do not interact with it. It is just an annoyance. In survival games, it is a mechanic around which everything is based, so it works (though many players still dislike it). In here or most other MMO's, it's pure annoyance.
