they may be online, but they are 4 players at most, there is a big difference in that and an MMORPGEven as a joke this is largely incorrect as there's a lot of PS3 games utilizing engines that can show visual wear & tear in various aspects that are indeed online.
From what I remember they said the current client design prevents a lot of stuff like this since it prevents being able to see a lot more models in general.



There is -- But the PS3 can handle it since it's mostly memory and processing power, which is what the PS2 lacked (hence "PS2 Limitations".)
A lot of the newer engines and updates to previous ones (Unreal and Havok for example) are done specifically to allow small details like this even to online/MMORPGs -- The only thing is in how the MMO itself is designed, if it's designed to take full advantage and designed to utilize memory correctly, it can easily be done.
If it's just a straight port, very little possibility of it happening.

but as of now SE put everything that should be on the client side ( like in ps3 ) to the server side that's why it's impossible for FFXIV now.
