Do I have to waste Money? (Ps4)

So I haven't played FF XIV since Stormblood was announced, pre-order access was on the verge of being released. I was playing HW during that time and thats when my subscription ran out.

My friends just got the free trial so I started playing again, they are planning on buying the Complete edition so I was planning on getting SB. But from what I see there's no discount on the Ps Store for SB (which includes both expansions) and whenever I use the mog station to "buy" it just takes me to the Ps4 Store.

I just looked again, the $20 price was actually the starter edition. However, it still stands that there is no discount/reimbursement for owning HW when buying the SB upgrade, which included HW. I have edited OP so it doesnt cause confusion.

Throwing in HW for SB for new players is just to encourage new players to buy the latest expac, if you were new you'd probably be deterred from buying the latest expac if you were gated by the previous expacs and had to buy those too. Theres nothing more to it than that really tbh ^^

That's a misconception. The price of SB at release is the same as the price of HW at release. You are not being cheated of the price. There is no need for a discount. It's not a mandatory bundle. In fact, it isn't a bundle at all. Rather, SE is giving HW for free to those who buy SB now.

SE made it so that there are 3 tiers of game content now for players.

1) Trial
2) Base game (ARR)
3) Expansion (All of them)

This is to make the game more accessible to players and new players won't have to spend a fortune buying all expansions in the future.

It wasn't a pre-order, anyone who wanted it could have bought it for $20, however, now that SB is out I have to pay $40 which half is HW. So I'm saying, did I just waste $20 cause theres no reimbursment for the SB+HW purchase thats mandatory to buying SB

20 dollars for stormblood AND heavensward? sounds like a deal to me. Im pretty sure i paid more than that, twice, as I preordered both expansions. Youre likely getting heavensward for free because its not relevant anymore..sounds like they want new players to not be forced to pay full price for old content. I support them..

Its HW cost $20, and the SB cost $40, but that includes HW, so what I'm saying is do I really have to spend $40 when half of what I'm buying is something I already own?
