L1 or R1 on it's own wouldn't work, because to use them for crossbars, you'd still be combining them with face buttons, and those combinations are already taken.

R1+any face button = switch to specific crossbar <-- essential for setting up crossbars in the first place, no matter how they're then accessed during play
L1+X/O/triangle/square = controls target filter <-- frequent use
L1+up/down = cycle targets through the enmity list. <-- VERY frequent use
L1+right/left = I think this one cycles between alliance lists <-- never used this, but only because I haven't done 24 man content. not sure how useful it is there

So do you want another three-way combo? Like maybe R2+R1 for one side and L2+L1 for the other?

I find the double clicking of the WXHB more awkward than the R2+L2 / L2+R2 of the extended one, but I just took to using extended for combat actions (where I need better responsiveness) and WXHB for out-of-combat actions (where I don't).

But actually, now that I've been using it a while, I've gotten more used to the double clicking, and it doesn't seem nearly as awkward as it did at first. So I'm thinking I might be able to incorporate some combat actions there after all. (I'm considering using it for the squadron actions, so I can get rid of that specialized squadron hotbar, which does still seem really awkward with a controller.)
