Would it be possible to get the conventional spell names patched in?

Given that the best time to have changed the names would have been when SB released I'm gonna go with no. Personally I don't mind current naming scheme myself in part because its a nice call back to what the original localization team had to do for the first Final Fantasy game (which was due to limited character space for those not in the know.)

Doesn't help that some new players who don't bother reading the descriptions will keep spamming Fire2 on single target or constantly Blizzard3 and Fire3ing. Thankfully they're rare cases, but I have a feeling the [spell+number] is partly to blame.

And if we went by Fire/ra/ga/whatever they decide for the fourth since that one doesn't seem to have a set name, the same people doing this with Fire 2/3 will do the exact same because hey, it has a different name so it must also be stronger and I no longer need Fire!

Maybe it's future-proofing? We're already sitting at level 4 Fire, Blizzard, and Ruin at level 70, and I don't know how many expansion we will have in the future. If we were to use those names, the last one is -ja at level 4 if I'm not mistaken. Then we would already have the strongest version of Fire, Blizzard, and Ruin the game could possibly have right now already.

To my understanding the Fourth level spells actually don't have a set name at least for SE. -Ja was used in XII I remember that much, yet Kingdom Hearts uses both -Za and -Gun with neither neccessarily being known as the more powerulfull one. So they have options to go beyond the fourth tier.

Firaja, Curaja etc. have been used for the 4th tier in the older FF-games such as IV. (I speak of the remakes, ofc, since S/NES didn't have enough text space for them.)

That's fair. I was actually thinking the same thing briefly. Have we ever seen a suffix for a fifth tier of a spell in any Final Fantasy game? It also makes me think about if the devs really want to keep on just adding higher tiers of spells. They're cool for eye candy, and I like them for that, but they really don't do anything for gameplay at all outside of Fire IV and Blizzard IV.

Yeah, the -ja spells are the 4th tier, it's only the 5th where things get less set in stone.
