Would it be possible to get the conventional spell names patched in?

The proper spell names, Fira, Firaga, Ruinga, etc are so much more interesting and feel better than "Fire 3". Square hasn't used a numbered system for spells in ages, and for good reason. The Japanese version uses the proper names of the spells, so why can't we? I'd even be happy with it just being a togglable HUD option.

Not to mention that considering the shift to reduced action sets and auto-upgraded spells, one really only needs to remember which is a single target action and which is an aoe, however they're called has little bearing on their use.

I'd be in favour of seeing the traditional naming return

I am a fan of this! It has been a disappointment since ARR for me! It might possibly make it easier to discern which spells are multi target also.

It definitely would add to the Final Fantasy feel and flavor!!

[One thing I like in Persona 5 is that their characteristic spell names (e.g. Agi/agilao/agidyne, maragi/maragidyne) also add some flavor that makes it feel like it is part of the series and the SMT universe.]

As someone who hasn't played any other FF games my opinion is that the so-called "proper" names just look silly and hard to remember.
Having some HUD option would be bad, because then players would know the spells under different names and much confusion would happen when trying to discuss what spell to cast.

    In short: No thanks.

Changing it now just seems inappropriate and inconvenient. Making a separate toggle just seems like a waste of Dev time for something so small.

    In short: No thanks.

There is a wonderfully tongue in cheek book in Gubal hard that explicitly mentions this. It's different in the JP and n/JP versions, but it's about the naming conventions and the IG council that decided to go with numerics. Incidentally, the reverse is true about maps. They're numbered in JP but have names in n/JP. It's strange the choices that're made.

Yeah, this was an unforgivable mistake of theirs, and the justification of it is just so unbelievably stupid that to me it's just plain wrong. It's a shame because I love the rest of the localization, but I just can't understand how they could get such a basic thing so damned wrong.

But I know it's never going to change unfortunately.

Doesn't help that some new players who don't bother reading the descriptions will keep spamming Fire2 on single target or constantly Blizzard3 and Fire3ing. Thankfully they're rare cases, but I have a feeling the [spell+number] is partly to blame. People can say that Fira and Firaga are confusing, but I'd say the same argument can be used for all the samurai+ninja skills with foreign names that make no sense to me as a non-JP speaker (or anime watcher).

I mean, I could almost sympathize with the argument that -ra/-ga/-ja would be confusing if it weren't for how obvious it is that "II" and "III" are just as unintuitive if not moreso. Using numerals implies that Fire II is stronger than Fire and Fire III superior to Fire which obviously is not always the case for either. Meanwhile, -ra and -ga are unique and mysterious enough to easily understand that they are their own spells with their own uses. The argument used for not using -ra/-ga/-ja utterly defeats itself with its own logic at almost every step and then even has two completely irrelevant (albeit interesting) sections, and all of that is extremely annoying to me. Sorry if I sounded overdramatic earlier.

For reference, the argument I'm discussing: http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...=1#post2824797

Yes, those are indeed also confusing, but that is no reason to add yet another confusing naming.
