The entirety of FFXIV, 1.0 especially, is rife with horrific details like this. Sexual assault, racism, genocide and more abound if you actually pay a lick of attention. Ala Mhigo has always had these elements present if you went digging for their lore, it's just now that we're finally seeing it spelled out for everyone in sharpie. Arenvald is hardly the only child who suffered in those circumstances and the entirety of the Ala Mhigan campaign from twenty years ago was heinous. To the point I honestly can't take people seriously if they know the lore and still claim Gaius is a good person. There is a reason so many in Fordola's generation were loyal to the empire and not all of it had to do with making a better life for themselves.

I think the issue here is that from what I understand, ARR cut back HEAVILY on the subtext compared to 1.0 and so a lot of people missed these story beats which were always present. They also toned down the rampant racism towards Keepers of the Moon and Duskwights in Gridania, keeping most of it to one off NPC dialogue, the Lancer guild, and the Post Moogle Quest lines. Then however once Heavensward came around they started to peel back the kids gloves and actually pick up a lot of 1.0's lore and the implications behind it, rather than kicking it under the rug and pretending nothing bad ever happened.

Though I can understand why this sort of change might be upsetting, it's been telegraphed for a long while.

Let me put it this way... We, as the players, get a sugar coated version of Eorzea. We don't have to deal with hunger like starving refugees in Ul'Dah. We can make money from killing stuff in the wilds instead of getting ripped off by the Syndicate, which seems to be the Enron of this world. Then there's the Primals who mind control anyone they make eye contact with, and we are immune to that. Invading beast tribes that slaughter hundreds of Wood Whisperers, but we're all 1 man armies so we don't have to suffer that. Point is, Eorzea is actually a TERRIBLE place to live without Hydaelen's blessing. Death lurks around every corner, as does poverty, plague, and despair. These little stories that come up just seek to remind us of that.

I guess you never played the Arcanist storyline... (or skipped thru MSQ in Little Ala'mhigo)

This is a game, not real life.

War is not kawaii hug puppies and cuddle kitties time. Go play Hello Kitty online.

Sucks you been though that irl (I have as well) but this is a game and not real life. If its REALLY bothering you seek counseling instead of taking it out on people here.

This was far more disturbing in my opinion because it happened and we just kinda like "welp... next quest then... gl Gundobald!". Do you ever wonder about the moral ambiguity of the WoL since he/she is just ok with moving on to the next thing?

I’m not going to air my problems out in public because this isn’t the place to do so, however I just wanted to add that the people that I’ve come across that have been abused in some way, I feel more of a connection with them than I do with other characters in the game. It’s not a nice topic and SE haven’t gone out of their way to make the stories vulgar in any way and I think they have handled it the best possible way they can. I’m very sorry for what you went through but unfortunately life doesn’t get put on hold and ffxiv has these stories in to make them more believable . As others have said, these instances are there to make you feel compassion for the victim and I’m not sure how far in stormblood yet but so far no rape stories have been introduced. I just think you are being overly sensitive about the issue, and although I can see why, it’s not fair to take it out on others who have responded with their opinions - non of which have been condoning rape but giving their take on why it’s prevelant at all.

not much wol can do. We took care of the b-tards who raped ad killed. a fighter has to turn off their emotions. Also people needd to stop seeing stuff as real life. :/

showing pity and victimizing others does more harm then good. they are survivors and should be left to heal not coddled.

If anything I think I would suggest, unless I'm missing something (which is possible since I haven't had time to finish the msq (stormblood) lol), is that the men in the game have room for this sort of abuse too.

Besides some obvious historic elements, like shaming males after they've lost in battle, or strong anomalies in target (some may point out rituals or religious), there is also a growing statistical awareness due to the definitions being improved and questions being adjusted.

This is not a call to competition to see hurts where more or a demand SE puts in "my issue";however, again unless I missed something, suggesting a possible place to tell a dark reality.

As for it being in the story I sort of felt "oh hey, bad things are happening, oh look more bad stuff, this is a bad time, bad, the story makes sense". I can understand it bothering people since it is an intense issue (weird/sort of funny how death doesn't though, even myself - desensitization must be a thing lol), but I guess personally it didn't set off any red flags of the dev's being in the wrong or having some weird fetish.

op is acting like a victim hood feminist. getting triggered by rape of women in the story of ff14. and attacking others for telling it how it is, as she continues to be a victim
