Why So Much Rape in Stormblood

On topic, however, the amount of rape in XIV never struck me as particularly glaring or egregious. When I first saw this title, I was sort of scouring my brain for characters who had been explicitly abused in this manner, but Yotsuyu was among the few I could think of...and with her it was kind of more implied?

This is what I appreciate in this game. They don’t shy away from some of these darker themes, but they are mostly implied and are never explicit. If you closely read all of the dialogue, you pick up on a lot of stuff. A lot of it isn’t good because much of the timeline is wartime. But crap happens regardless.

One thing I do hate is the fact that most ‘pleasure’ industry women are depicted as Miqo'te. What canonical reason is there for that? The fact that we do not have a home (or at least one shown in the game yet...besides Forgotten Springs which belongs to a single tribe). Yes, the Miqo’te are nomadic and hunters, but we need somewhere to hang our hats. Getting off point. Anyway, Miqo’te have teeth and claws and are hunters by nature, so why do this “work” for a worm of a potato? Some would say money, I suppose. But the same could be true of females of any race. By and large, it is always Miqo’tes.

Didn't take long for a feminists to play the victim card and resort to violence either. What do people say about sticks and stones again? Blanket generalizing is fun for both sides.

You shouldn't use terms you don't understand. "Fridging" more refers to prominent female characters who solely exist to propel a prominent male character's tragic backstory. Hence why the trope ordinates from Gwen Stacy's death as the catalyst for Spiderman. Furthermore, it usually references poor uses of the example not ones more fleshed out but I digress. If you want to "call out" inequality, shall we start with Aymeric being the only male leader? I mean, if everything has to be equal at all times, it goes both ways. FFXIV has routinely placed female characters in highlighted or largely important roles, be it alongside you or in authoritative positions.

Critiques may not be condemnations, but that doesn't mean they can't be disingenuous either.

It seems like rape and abuse of women in particular just keeps coming up again and again in Stormblood and while this isn't the first time it's come up in FFXIV it feels a lot more prevalent in Stormblood. I know I'm not the only one who thinks so.

Did Yoshida watch too much Game of Thrones or something?

Not only does it interfere with the escapist fantasy of FFXIV for it to come up so often but it feels like really weak writing? Like, if that's your go-to in so many situations, it feels like a lack of creative ability on the writer's part.

Not saying everybody has to have a happy story but the FFXIV team can do better than this. It dampens my excitement somewhat to know that I now have to wonder about if any particular questline I'm interested in might have rape in it.

"Who else in Eorzea was raped" is far from an interesting or exciting plot detail.

Monsters with power do monstrous things, and they had twenty years to do it. Better i say than pretending it doesn't happen in conquered territories. In real world history some countries have gone as far to erase the facts from history books and paint over their nations past acts to better present themselves. You need only look at the stories of "Comfort women" in WW2...

Whatever your own personal history, however tragic, calling it a plot detail/ device is not only insulting but completely uncalled for. For all of it's fantasy FFXIV( and the FF series as a whole) has never shied away from some of the more important and real aspects of war and it's effects/ ramifications.

The whole white knighting and self entitled, victimizing people to even bring this thread up and supporting it should really go to deserted island with no internet. You are literally living by yourself in that island where no one will hurt you over smallest things in this world and you won't bother others. If you are trying to fight against the subject of rape, instead of trying to sugarcoating it - why not accept the reality and support these works to fight the rights?

Not all writers actually enjoy writing about viral subjects like these as if they are doing it for enjoyment. It's more of explanation of history and culture due to war between nations.

Also most FFXIV theme base is really related to medieval and pre-modern culture.
