    Oh yeah, you certainly got into one of the lulls in the story there. You beat the "ultimate boss" at level 50 and youre so pumped... and then the story spends what feels like forever doing "monster of the week", "be your own army", and "help the refugees". The refugee stuff becomes important a bit later on, as the newest expansion goes to the lands the refugees came from. The army bit becomes important because reasons(spoiler free!). To me, "monster of the week" parts just felt like them hurrying out primals for the other elements so we'd have a full collection(i guess spoiler alert if you hadnt noticed that we fought only 3 elements worth in the ARR MSQ, but yeah the other 3 are in the 2.x line). The better story bits are "ishgard problems" which leads straight into the ishgard expansion, and "politics" because reasons. But "politics" is doesnt directly involve you right away(and i guess spoiler alert here too if you didnt think those scenes would ever involve you - they will soon enough), its just scenes at meetings you arent attending. And ishgard doesnt start until the later part of that patch cycle. So in summary... it gets better.

    Thank God for that! I feel like now I have a much better grasp on it.

    I just noticed though the FC I was part of has kicked me out! I'm not much of talker when I'm playing the game, but I will always take part in events etc if they suit my time preferences (I work 45 hours a week and have a partner who isn't massively fond of me sitting in front of my PC for hours..) Does this stop me from joining many FC's which are out there?

    Nope, you just need to find a more casual and mature FC. I am player similar to yourself. Full-time work, wife, kids, other commitments, etc... It all adds up to me only able to play after kids bedtime and not every night yet frequently enough to participate in most of the game features. I struggle with end game raid items because I cannot commit to a static nor can I invest the hours needed to learn the new raid material in the early stages when everyone is more willing to accepting learning players vs just getting their weekly clears.

    I've come to FF14 after been an avid player of WoW (Yes, as much as it pains me to admit I am enjoying this game a lot more..) and I just feel lost, I'm going through the story at the moment which is fun, but everything else I feel like I'm falling behind on.

    There's quests to unlock certain Dungeons and Raids which I feel like I'm missing, I feel like I should be levelling different classes all at the same time.

    Basically I feel like I'm in a mess on here and that I've missed some key components to this game.

    I'm just looking for some advice really, or maybe a couple of vertern friends to add so I can get some help along the way (This is a very lonely game when you're just playing by yourself! haha)

    Appreciate any help which comes my way!
    First of Welcome;

    Have fun and explore. It will take you a while.

    Hmmm Main story will unlock most of the dungeons, and some related side quest to main story will do the others. Some dungeons or certain things must be unlocked by searching for the Blue exclamation marker or you may need to go online to unlock. Some features such as Classes / Chocobo / Card game / EX modes ma need to be done side quest or roaming around. You may want to review old updates on load stone as well on your down time ( work or so :P )

    Just a friendly tip I would recommend having at least one of every role ( Tank / Healer / Support / Range ) for the most flexibility as things may change your play style. I also recommend DoL and DoH to make gill and repair gear when needed.

    ^ This.

    The Main Story Quests (with the fire/meteor icon) are great. They slow down once at Lv50 and again at Lv60 but they're very good EXP and help you unlock most of the game content. Quests with a (+)plus icon unlock additional features, such as dungeons or Grand Company promotions. They're very good to do!

    Don't worry about feeling behind. There are a lot of things to do in this game and you certainly don't have to do all of them right now, or ever! Find a FC (or join a couple if you don't like the first one!) and make yourself at home.

    Welcome to Eorzea!
