I don't think the fact they have them is silly. What is silly is the price of them. $9, I mean come on. Maybe $2-3 tops but $9 is just absurd, especially when they don't have an option to change jobs after they are leveled without restarting at level 1.

The price of the job potions makes sense, once your char is leveled its permanent no matter how many times you swap back and forth, the retainer ones are just adding insult to injury imo

The intent behind the higher price is meant to discourage players from using them too frequently. You're only meant to use one if you really want to and are willing to pay the premium on it, versus switching and boosting on a whim. At least, that's the idea behind pricing it higher than it's worth (same thing with the job boost and story skip).
