I loved the raid itself, but absolutely hated the groups I attempted it with. Long rant incoming:
First three groups were so full of salt and toxicity. Day 1 and everybody expects people to clear it in one go and start yelling and fingerpointing and namecalling different teams/players without giving any tips how to improve. Like, when I first did Hashmal and asked how to avoid the Extreme Edge-charge (lol that name) and the one-shotting dot effect you get from it, the only answer I get on alliance chat is "dodge it". Didn't help in the slightest when from my then point of view it looked like the whole arena was unsafe and I didn't realise to look out for his flamed arm. Two members of my team spam the party chat with "kick me pls" and refused to enter the fight.
Second group couldn't even beat first boss and you can imagine the amount of salt and rage that was going on in alliance chat.
Third party went better, we got through Mateus and Hashmal. I was in team B and didn't realise our team was the only one to go underwater and have those notes. I didn't want to keep people waiting, so I quickly swam to them, took a screenshot and moved on. Didn't take many seconds for the alliance chat to be filled with salt to our team for lagging behind. The floor markers weren't added before pulling the third boss, so when the time came to kill the three shielded adds, our team was confused and ran to the closest add which of course resulted with team B's add not dying on time and us wiping. Again alliance chat was full of fingerpointing and rage. They put all the markers on our add's spot and sarcastically wondered if there were enough marks for us to notice. Next time we get to that phase, people are where they are supposed to be, but tank isn't aware how to place the mob ideally, so our add cleaves the other two teams and we wipe. People start leaving, myself included. I was sick and tired of all the rage at that point and thought to myself I wouldn't do the raid until a week later when a guide was available and people were more familiar with the fight.
My friend listens to me rant and offers to come with me for one more try. We wipe few times on each boss, but the atmosphere is much calmer. There's another XII/Tactics enthusiast on the alliance chat whom I silently nerd with with each callback and reference. Hashmal's 2nd wipe induces some sarcastic comment from alliance chat, but one member from my group pointed out that there was no need to be rude when almost everybody was new to the raid, to which the other person replied everybody should be familiar all the mechanics from the other 24-man raids. I silently wonder what game he's been playing as I can't recall Hashmal-like mechanics from any other raid. We get to last boss and manage to kill it in two tries. I got four commendations even though I was just a nub dhurrgoon and my day and rest of the week were saved.
Now, as for the raid itself: I love the difficulty of the fights and the reimagined places from XII and Tactics. One thing that really caught my attention was when Mateus seperated the ice goddess from himself and let her dance around the floor. Was not expecting that and thought it was the coolest (huehue) thing ever. I love how the espers/lucavi have several different elements at their disposal. The third boss whose name I always forget but dubbed as The Truck wasn't as challenging and confusing, but super fun as well. I'm still not 100% sure what was going on in the last boss, but I was nerding in glee when I had the unfortunate herpderp and became a dark knight-zombie or a chicken. The callbacks and references to XII+Tactics are just pure gold. And I've been itching to give Algus/Argath a good smack as I recently started playing Tactics again.
Tl;dr doing the raid alone without any friends sucks, the raid itself is fantastic and tickles my nostalgia.
(Ps. Ramza and Alma make me happy.)
