It really feels like they went out of their way to create the smallest NPC text boxes they could get away with. For a game where over 90% of the dialogue isn't voiced and has to be read (speaking of ARR, not sure what the expansions are like), it is such a bizarre design decision to have such tiny text boxes. Every option I've tried in the menus blows up the rest of the UI as well to the point that the UI takes over the entire screen, which I don't want or need.
I mean there's just no reason the text box needs to be that tiny. I'll submit a bug report, but not sure to expect much. It's just a shame, because I've otherwise really appreciated how customizable the UI in the game is.
Found this over in the JP forum:
From what I can gather from Google Translate (and the fact that the thread topic is basically the same as this one), it's a community manager of some sort? I don't know. Maybe some of you can tell better than me.

Google translate is pretty poor, but that sounds like they are saying they can’t fix it? I don’t understand. The ability to scale the boxes was there and then they removed it and now they have no clue how to implement such a feature even though they literally just removed it in the last patch??
The only guess I've got is that when they fix it, it creates some other problem in the code. Not that I know anything about programming, I've just heard that kinda stuff happens. Ya know, like "99 little bugs in the code, 99 little bugs, take one down, patch it around, 127 little bugs in the code"
But why would they have removed the option in the first place? Was it creditng problems before 4.1? I never noticed any, other than that it was fucking annoying to have to resize the box every time I logged in so I would be able to enjoy the game
Got a friend of mine who knows japanese translate the message posted above
"Hello.
・Regarding text in event scenes
Because the camera and character motion are decided upon with the text and textbox size in mind, it's difficult to individually adjust them and at this time there are no plans to adjust them.
・Regarding NPC text bubbles
Since the amount of content displaying combat messages like in Stone Vigil is increasing, priority will be lowered compared with other work, but I want to look into it sometime. However, since languages other than Japanese may be quite long, we need to see whether or not it's feasible and how much room there would be for enlargement."
It explains nothing. It answeres not of the questions. I am very saddend by this

That doesn’t really make sense to me. I mean, it was fine before. Having a larger text bubble size during cut scenes didn’t ruin anything and outside of cut scenes it was also fine and there was plenty of room for the enlargement that was offered. Now all of a sudden they are saying it was a problem so they removed it and won’t add it back? Sounds like maybe they just want the game to look exactly a certain way and don’t want an extra half inch of screen real estate to be taken up by dialog boxes? Which also make no sense since you can make other UI elements absolutely enormous..... So yeah I’m not getting it. I just really hope they fix it, but it’s not looking good.
I made a post with a picture. Feel free to steal the picture and post it everywhere. Maybe if we bother them enough they'll do something about it.
So it looks like the ability to resize the speech window is coming back in 4.2. And this time it'll actually save the setting on log out.
