    Bombs don't 'Self-Destruct' ?

I don't know if they decided to go with a different name this time around or what. In every other Final Fantasy game, bombs have had the ability where they get big over a few turns and finally blow themselves up.

As far as I know, this ability was always called "Self-Destruct". In FFXIV though, it's called "Explosion".

I dunno, it's not a big issue I guess, but it was just bothering me. I mean this is like cactuars that don't use 1000 Needles! I think bombs should "Self-Destruct"!

Same result with a different name. Still hurts if it gets the chance to use on me.

Probably the same name in japanese. Could be that the original localization was inaccurate.

I prefer "Self-Destruct" over "Explosion". Bombs are sentient beings, and the choice to explode and emit pain showers to your face and torso is theirs! "Self-Destruct" implies the creature decided to end it's life to hurt everything in a radius, while "Explosion" could just mean... an explosion, "Explosion" also means there is a chance of survival on the Bomb's part.

Yep I play on JP language and for bombs it still shows 自爆 jibaku - self-destruct as it always did in previous FF series must be locale translator not knowing FF or something w

Thank goodness some of the lower level cactuars don't use 1000 Needles anymore. Now they have 100 Needles!!!

    Hello all,

Thank you very much for bringing this to our attention.
You are absolutely correct in assuming that this should be 'self-destruct' and not 'explosion,' and we apologize for the mix up.

This was not a locale translator not knowing FF or something, but a rare case of the creative process getting mired in a...er...mire of...uh, goo. Coming up with enemy attack names is actually a joint effort by the Lore, Battle, and Localization teams. Because the JP version has chosen to employ a great deal of English in their names, it often falls to the Localization team to first come up with suggestions (based on the animation, resulting effects, and whether or not it is a legacy attack) that then the JP team takes and either renders into katakana, or translates into Japanese (kanji). There are also times when the JP team specifically asks the EN team to change attack names into words that sound better, or are more easily recognized when changed into katakana. I recall 'explosion' being one of these cases. Back before the beta test, the Lore team (at that time) wanted to use a katakana word (instead of 自爆) for the self-destruct attack bombs used. For whatever reason, explosion sounded better to them, so the EN was penciled in as such. However, it seems that somewhere along the line, someone on the team decided (correctly) that because this was a legacy attack, it should have the legacy term attached to its name. Unfortunately, the EN team didn't get the memo (towards the end of the Beta Test, we were fielding hundreds of bugs a day) and Explosion was never adjusted to meet the JP...UNTIL TODAY.

Excuses aside, this is definitely a Localization issue, and we apologize to everyone for not catching it when we should have (more than a year ago!). I went into the file this morning and changed the attack name to Self-destruct. The amended text should be implemented in the coming 1.20b patch. I'll make sure I add a bullet point to the 1.20b patch notes as well, so those who missed this post will know what's coming.

I want to thank everyone again (especially Zetsumei Tsunarashi) for bringing the issue to light. You guys are great! If your eagle eyes spot anything else out of the ordinary, please let us know. Mistakes are inevitable, but so are hotfixes
