How come NA hasn't got a new data center to help with this issue?
I don't think it would matter now even if they made an official rp server anymore. The problem with balmung is that people are so rooted in their communities. With all the incentives, the main one being a better chance at a house, we only lost a couple thousand at 4.0, and around half of those people have already been "replaced" by returning players (25k @pre-lock -> 21k @4.0 -> 23k @current).

The ghost town servers finally have some semblance of a population, a new DC full of new servers (RP or no) would be overkill.

They did not do enough intensives soon enough. They really need a new server with a RP label on it, I am sure people will move. People moved to
    http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...ghlight=Mateus
and took all the housing and i wasn't enough apparently as it seemed they filled fast.

It is not "overkill" when they completely lock out 2 servers from making new characters on it.

um... I thought it was obvious? There isn't enough room for the housing shortage so we need a new server. How come EU got one but we didn't?

I'm pretty sure the Mateus thing proved that people weren't willing to move. The amount of people stubbornly sticking to Balmung and then complaining they couldn't log in when Stormblood came out was proof enough of that.

SE offered preferred server moves as an option for a "new server" for the NA population - not their fault people weren't taking them up on the offer and no-one on Balmung seems too fussed about expanding their RP community outside of one server, especially with cross server chat coming in 4.1.

SE wouldn't have gotten into that mess if they had locked Balmung sooner from character creation "and" transfer ins. I've been on this server since it formed and slowly watched as Balmung became way over-saturated.

It took an expansion, a server lock, and the removal of the gil restriction to get people to play on mateus/zalera/goblin. From here on out, the population is only going to shrink as we lose slowly those who don’t get hooked when the SB hype dies down.

EU got new servers because existing EU servers’ populations were pretty evenly distributed and at risk of becoming overcrowded when SB launched. A new NA DC will end with new pre-lock mateus/zalera/goblins- ie. dead. We have enough servers, people simply do not want to move to them.

Mind you, I do agree that there aren't remotely enough houses per server. Adding a new server or DC and calling it a day will not solve the problem though.

Please elaborate, I'd love to see how adding a new data center would fix population balance, RP or housing.

The Lucky Bancho census had an unusual quirk in it's "active" player records in that JP datacenters have far more servers spread out with a lower population of players compared to the western regions. While they do have popular servers that have quadruple the population of these lowbie servers, it makes me wonder if having 15-ish servers with only a few thousand active players, most being Japanese, skews how SE sees the limited housing. I also don't know if JP players make good use of FC rooms and apartments, so it's just a theory.

I am on a middling pop server, I expect Shirogane and any relocated homes to be filled in a day or two of 4.1. There are wards with 2 or three apartments.

Really, if they could give us room sizes and multi-room layouts to apartments, housing wouldn't be an issue anymore since they have an instanced alternative in place. Ugh.
