So I'm gonna keep it brief. Are there any tips or tricks to leveling crafter jobs in QS that help to lessen the droning sense of time it takes to progress or is it just set up the mass production and watch youtube and repeat?

Well, at least I'm trying...
Just tab out basically. If you want a more interesting way of leveling crafting you'll want to do leves.

I'm assuming levequests are just as arduous as making countless fodder?

The big difference is that by doing levequests (and grand company daily supply missions) you're getting a pile of bonus exp (and extra gil/gc seals) in addition to the crafting exp for making the items. You also get double exp if you hand in HQ versions of the requested item(s), so the crafting itself becomes more interesting.
It's much, much faster to level up than just grinding things out with QS.
If it is for leveling purposes I hope you know you will get much more XP for crafting items if you increase their quality a bit. Doing so won't even take much more time time than using quick synthesis.
It will require many more keypresses though, so you can't go AFK like you can when using QS.
QS is not supposed to be used to level crafters: It gives less (or no) exp depending on your level and depending on your gear it has a fairly high failrate. So its rather meant for massproduction of items during endgame.
To help you level your crafters you've got the following "tips and tricks" at your disposal:
- levequests are an obvious one
- Daily GC-turn ins are giving lots of exp!
- you get a weekly exp-bonus for crafting items, for crafting HQ-items and for melding materia into gear - just make sure you're on the right job when you finish those tasks
- Beasttribes will help you level your crafters aswell: The Ixal from 1-50, the Moogles from 50-60
- once you hit 50 you can also unlock collectiables that will give you exp and red scrips (I'd recommend that more for cul though since those mats are often cheap enough)
- with patch 4.1 tomorrow you'll also gain exp when you deliver goods to Zhloe in idleshire
- you might have also noticed that you get bonus-exp each time you craft an item for the first time - you could look into that aswell.
Conclusion: Do anything but QS to level up crafters!
QS is not the way to level your crafters. In fact, I believe it is the least efficient method to do so and is pretty much the equivalent of a combat class leveling up by beating up countless weaker mobs. There is a good reason why we are required to actually craft an item before we can QS it.
The fastest way to level your crafters without resorting to leves and beast tribes is to actually craft items in your level range and attempt to HQ them from NQ mats; do your daily GC turn-in(s); and complete your challenge logs. After you have exhausted your quick exp methods for the day/week it's on to collectibles.
Of course, I am not saying you can't level through QS. You're just going to burn through far more shards/crystals, gil, and mats doing so opposed to leveling up through more traditional means. If you are going to do it this way, you simply choose the highest level item you can QS with the most convenient to obtain mats and go to town. No other way around it really.
