Can't activate chocobo to get combat chocobo

1. I try to activate the battle chocobo.
2. Right clicking on the greens in the companion window just gets a unable to use.companion not yet acquired message.
3. I clearly have the chocobo needed as it's in my inventory, and I ride it a lot.
