In many fights you'll get as much or more dps by standing in melee range and tossing in those high damage staff auto-attacks than you would by standing back and just casting (the high damage part is sarcasm).

I do just this, for the reason you stated, but also so DRG can give me the red line damage buff. Honestly, there is no reason to not be in melee range in pretty much any fight, provided you know when the boss does melee proximity AOEs so you can move ahead of time to keep casting.
