    Crafting worthwhile for new character?

I'm playing a gladiator and just got to level 10. I was thinking about picking up mining and armorer but I read I will not be able to keep that leveled as I am playing. Also, I find I out level the main story quest even though I am only doing the main story quest and the gladiator class quests.

    Thanks for any insight.

    Short answer? Yes.

Even at lower levels you're capable of crafting your own weapons, armor, food ,and consumables. The recipes are designed such that if you have all your classes at an equal level (At least, all gatherers, all crafters, and a battle class) you should be able to obtain all the ingredients you need to craft gear you'll use at that level. There are a few exceptions, but they're not the norm.

I will say though, that if you're going to level a single crafter you should level them all. This allows them to share gear (Except for the tools), and there is a LOT of overlap between them, with cross-class abilities, secondary materials, and the simple fact that no class uses items from just a single crafter.

If you choose to, you can keep your crafting and gathering classes even with your adventuring ones. In fact, if you want you can even get your crafting/gathering ahead of your adventuring. At certain points in the story that can be a headache, but there are plenty of people whove made it work. And Urthdigger has the right of it, most of the time everything is lined up to let you make yourself useful items if your classes are close in level. For instance a miner can start gathering cobalt in(roughly) the mid 40s, and an armorer at that level can use the cobalt(along with other things) to make armor that a gladiator(paladin) in the same level range could equip. This is the general pattern all the way from iron to the highest level materials, and having the option to make yourself an upgrade can help if youre having poor dungeon luck.

Also, its fairly common for your MSQ to fall behind your level early on. There are some level ranges with a lot more quests to get through, and thus a lot more exp to be had(later on there are also a few points where the MSQ completely skips a level or more so this works both ways). Any instanced story content(dungeons, solo story fights, trials) will have a level sync set to it, so you can usually get a level or 2 ahead for a small advantage, but anything higher will get set to a certain max level. Because of the auto-sync some people choose not to worry about outleveling things. If you are the type to be bothered by this, consider grabbing a second adventuring class that can take some of the extra exp from your quests and thus keep you closer to the intended levels. Just try not to overdo it, as you can always accept a quest youve outleveled but when you find one you dont meet the minimum for yet you just have to wait/grind it out.

I think another thing to think about is what you want out of the game... are you in for the long run or you planning to rush through get to end game and then move on to the next mmo and only come back when patches are released.
Long run: then yes to crafting cause it opens up another world to you to enjoy this game.
Short life: no cause if you just want to sample the game nonHQ gear is cheap enough from NPCs and the MSQ will help you level and after 50 the MSQ gives you free HQ gear not counting the dungeon gear you will get from doing dungeons while you are leveling.

Wait, what? Who said you can't keep it leveled as you play? That's ....

Look. Craft if you want to, no matter the level of your main class, or any for that matter. I have a level 51 Bard and I'm working on everything, even if my crafters are level 10!

There will be times where you might have difficulty getting materials you need, but don't be afraid to use the Market Board and possibly trade with others in game.

Personally, I find if you make goals for yourself each day or week, things can get done. Like switching up what you do every other day.

It's not that you can't keep crafting leveled to match your combat class(es), or even that it's particularly hard to do so. It's simply that doing so does take a fair amount of time, especially if (as is often recommended), you advance multiple crafting classes and at least a couple gathering ones together.

For people who are in a hurry to reach endgame levels, whether that's to join their friends who are already doing endgame content or just to follow the story with a minimum of interruptions to it, taking the time out from that to level crafting can bog things down too much for their taste. If you spend most of your time questing with your gladiator and a much lesser portion of your time on crafting, then your GLD will outstrip your crafting classes' levels, and you won't be able to craft your armour.

If, on the other hand, you're the type to take your time and explore a wider range of activities from the start, and find you like the game's crafting system enough to spend a fair amount of your game time on it, then, as others have said, you can certainly do all of them in tandem and keep your crafting at a suitable level to make your GLD armour.

It's just a matter of deciding which type of player you are. For many, it works better to focus first on a single combat class and advance all the way through the story until they reach endgame, and only then broaden their horizons to pick up extras like crafting. There are many others who like to do them all together, or even get their crafting a bit ahead. And then, of course, there are the players who never get interested in doing any crafting at all. The game works for any of those three patterns.

That you're interested enough to have asked the question suggests you probably don't fall into that third category, so it will come down to deciding whether crafting early in the game is worth the time it takes. To decide that, you'll first need to see whether you enjoy crafting itself, so I'd suggest picking up armorer and crafting your way through the first 15 levels or so. That won't give you all the skills you'll eventually have, but it's far enough to get an idea of how the crafting system in this game works, so you can decide whether you enjoy it or not.

I disagree with some of the posts above. From what I understand from the OP, it's about: is it worth it to craft his own gear for his gladiator while leveling it. And it that particular case, I would say no. The leveling dungeons, as well as the main quest provides all you need to level comfortably.

At worst if you think you're missing some adequate pieces of equipment, you can run a dungeon again for loot. This can mostly happens at lower levels, as the further you progress in the main quest, the more you will get rewarded with free entire set of HQ armors and weapons.

Also one tip to the OP: Upon reaching level 15, you will unlock access to the Hall of Novice. It is a chain of short solo tutorial instances. It will reward you with a nice full ilevel 17 armor set.

Short version: You should not pick up crafting just for the sake of crafting gears you hope to equip while leveling your first class. It's not worth it. Pick up crafting if you enjoy crafting and want to make real use of it later for more than equipping your first leveling class.
