I love this patch and I'm very excited about it. Either I'm *~*special*~* or you're a very, very boring person OP -laughs-.

I mean, I am personally excited about Shirogane housing, Shinryu Ex, and the new 24-man, but these won't keep the player base enthralled for any kind of meaningful amount of time.
I think the complaint is a valid one. Obviously, saying that the patch is empty is hyperbolic, but it does feel like it is lacking. At the very least, some kind of new relic weapon would have helped to keep players' interest for longer.
All that said, it's not like I am going to unsubscribe - but I would enjoy a wider breadth of content in patches going forward.

It's normal for a mid-cycle patch to add more content (I'm pretty sure that's how PotD was released and most Anima relic steps started on those, too), I do feel the lull a bit, too.
I still have plenty of back log content to do, but 4.1 looks to be the ultimate QoL patch verses the normal content updates. Some of this is stuff we've been begging for for years, like minions and chocobos being out together, and we still need help for some jobs having balancing issues. It's all great stuff, just a little less tangible.
So, I'm genuinely excited for that, but it kinda guts our regular daily stuff since, other than one new dungeon and getting the weekly drop from the new 24-man, there isn't much new on that front. 4.1 is mostly story content.

new beast tribe which was expected. how does it gut the regular daily stuff?

Oh! I forgot about those! (Ahh I need to get on those @-@)
Honestly, it's more, since we're coming off the expansion, we'll still be on the same stuff to grind for maximizing ourselves. Other than the 24-man and Scalla. Although, I haven't looked at what DoL/DoH have to deal with now.
Stormblood really didn't succeed in lowering the skill ceiling at all, did it?

Goes to show that people just can't be pleased with anything; it's an all or nothing ordeal anymore.
Personally, I like what's coming to us and no, I'm not a fan of garbage. I'm just realistic on what to expect. We aren't getting two dungeons; this was said long before 4.0 even dropped in fanfests. I don't know why you are expecting different. I don't know why you (general) want two dungeons when one was always more superior to run and most people flocked to that one anyway. I don't know why people want tiers of difficulty for the same stuff (as it is, would rather they did away with normal raids while keeping savage difficulty). We have tiers of difficulty and there are just always people unwilling to do the content (IE: hard mode primals with extremes as a higher tier; story raids with savage as a higher tier; 24 man raids as a higher tier to.... normal dungeons and story raids).
On relics, the only relic released on/ near launch was 2.0's very first relic. Back when all hardmode primals, actually considered very hard back then, were required just to unlock raids. You also needed their mats to make the relic weapon, which was also pretty much required to raid. After that, relic, relic upgrades and anything pertaining to them have not been released at the same time as a current raid tier being so "fresh" (depending on perspective and defining when content begins going "stale"). Keep in mind, relics in Heavensward were not released until 3.15; this is patch 4.1.
Let's be real here. We are still getting content (definition: things that are included in something), so it's not like you're being denied a service you've paid a membership for. Like I told a friend before, back in 3.x, just because it's stuff you don't want to do, or look forward to, doesn't negate its existence nor enjoyment for others.

^ I'm making this wonderful quote as my new signature! Thank you for posting thisLet's be real here. To OP: Seriously, what more could you possibly want?? Don't you dare say dungeons because people will moan and gripe about that too (ex: "There's nothing to do besides the two LVL 70 expert dungeons" :>...)
Have fun playing with other games while you wait.
Shoot, I'm having a hard time keeping up with content; just when I thought I was done with everything, more stuff shows up and my to-do list keeps stretching @.@

I dunno, I kinda felt the same way at first, but the more I see of that PvP mode, the more interested I get. Personally, I've been looking for a competitive game with little to no stakes (i.e. time investment, learning curve, cost of entry, etc) and well, I already play this game so a good PvP mode is intriguing.
Housing is also something I'm looking forward to, but that's only assuming I can actually get a house. Speaking of which, that more than anything else is easily my biggest gripe with this game. It's 2017 and we're gonna be at each other's throats in less than two weeks because of the world's most popular MMOs with one of the biggest budgets still can't figure out housing. Meanwhile, multiple, lesser games have come and gone with housing systems that were exponentially better. And then, like some sort of cruel joke, they still refuse to stop alts from buying up the limited housing. It's honestly like they're aren't even trying to fix this mess. sigh, I need to stop or this is just going to lead into a much longer rant.

The patch is huge and you'll see in the patch notes how many things they've been working on, but I think its trailer is the least effective one they've made. They stopped putting in titles for each piece of content /playing them in sequence, instead they just spliced together a bunch of footage from everything but it makes it look like there's nothing, you don't feel the weight of how many pieces of content there are. So I think there was no reason to change the old formula for hype trailers.
And yeah, patches getting smaller is a myth. Instead of a hard mode dungeon you're getting the first ever Ultimate fight, a deeper section of Unzair treasure dungeon with new mechanics and a lot more QoL and new features than normal, materia removal etc. So they are shooting for more effective content, less pointless content.
