    Do the enemies more difficult to beat adding better IA, make then do differents strategies like causing status effects and even calling reinforcement and escape to tend you an ambush, give them more elemental and magical attacks and make us think. The duration of the battle will be longer inderectly without need of cheap HP improvements, and only the work of the party or the player will decide how fast the battle ends.

    Enemies should need different stratigies to be defeated, and they should force the player to change his strategy in battle to avoid monotony battles. For example, a monster can low its defense but rose its attacks to dangerous levels, which will force player to play more defensively if he dont want to be dead in 2-3 attacks of the monster. The same monster can rise its defenses very high, making the player to rely on magic or debuffer skills, or special attacks to break the defense while taking care of his HP.

    Other monster can rise it evasion, making it hard to kill, or raise its magic so you can put in use your magic defense. Other can teleport in battle and summon other weaker monster, and we can go on listing possibilities!

    More variated and difficult battles will make combat longer, or atleast thats how I see it ^^
