Testing damage isn't the only reason...
Practicing combo's on a stationary mob is easier than one that can move.
Macros
Attack range
Ability Rotations
A more consistent gauge for dps. (Mob level can vary in areas and you can't really solo Ifrit can you?)
-Not to mention its hard to test DPS on mobs that die in 15 seconds.
*You may not want this, but if you read the suggestion it would be to put it in an under used part of the Cities, so chance that you would "stumble" across it are low. You would have to go to the area they are housed.*

you can that that all in a real fight too. And you will learn more then just hitting on a dummy.Testing damage isn't the only reason...

dont you want to explore your own skills and stregth through a real fight rather then hitting a dummy and see what kind of dmg you do.
I also wonder if you will get any good results, because you have to count in so many factors when calculating dmg. lvl of mob, defense, vit and maybe even more. Mobs have diffrent stats so what stats would you give the dummy?

The point is to get something of a baseline down in terms of a "vanilla" rotation. One makes adjustments on-the-fly or after the real fight is over but you need to start somewhere and every minute of writing basic macros or adjusting keybinds from extrapolated test dummy results is another minute you don't need to waste the of the group's time after you wipe on a boss. The group's 7 total minutes vs. you're 1 minute while you write a macro you could have done before going out is always going to be outweighed. The practical applications of a test dummy are useful, but they're not going to really break anything.you can that that all in a real fight too. Now, I do not like them personally. I can't quite describe the ill-feeling I get when thinking about them but it's more related to a player-mentality they foster rather than the practical benefits they bring for people to prepare for group content.

You don't like fostering the mentality to be the best that you can possibly be?

o the same thing rift has in there towns. sure why not
No thanks if you want to practice combos there are plenty of mobs to do that on that you can not kill in 1 -2 hits. All you need to do is go do it solo some where with if at lvl cap the mobs are level 55. No pain no gain!!!
